Flyway Question

Postby JPII » Fri Mar 01, 2002 8:29 pm

Gentlemen..The following is from an article in the Delta Waterfowl Report Vol. 2001 Issue II;

"SEASON FRAMEWORKS MAY CHANGE"

"A plan has been tendered that would change season frameworks across the flyways. The proposed change would afford northern states the option to open duck season on the weekend closest to the 24th of September and allow more southerly states the option to maintain seasons to January 31. In preliminary discussions with the flyway councils at the recent North American Wildlife Conference in Washington, D.C., three and one-half of the councils tenatively approved of the plan with the northern half of the Mississippi flyway presenting the only dissent. The final determination will be made by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service after further discussions with the flyway councils and a public comment period."

Note that no mention of the infamous nine-day "penalty" was made in these comments.

Your "enemy" is the nine state bloc of Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota..they're the ones trying to run your seasons not the six southern states of the Mississippi flyway.

Looks like a good case for dividing up the Mississippi flyway into a southern and a northern zone with each having total autonomy from the other.

As one of the prime factors in determining season length & bag limits is number of hunters in a particular flyway this could result in an even longer season for the southern states since the hunter numbers are lower than their northern counterparts..sounds like a plan to me!

BTW, the back page of this DW report has the following verbiage: "For the future of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting"..no squishy language as to where Delta stands on hunting, eh?

Uh, sorry....I completely missed your point.
'Care to elaborate? 'Sounds like your boys took a pretty good whoopin' at this past weekend's Civil War reinactment.

As this thread was directed to the "gentlemen" it isn't surprising that others find it bewildering..consider the source.

Some may find this of interest - http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/1999/mateloss/mateloss.htm

Personally, I could care less if the season was extended to March 31st as long as we don't threaten the resource.
