Pigeon Shoot Ring?

I know that 31 yards from shooter box to center bird box is the norm. Does anyone know if there is a standard ring size or if it even matters?

I'm not sure what the dimensions are, but if you're talking about live pigeon shooting (also known as 'flyers'), it matters......'cause if the bird lands outside that circle, you loose.

I witnessed a shoot at the Greater Houston GC back in the 60's where the shooter and the thrower (human) stood in close proximity to each other. I think the circle was a 30yd (maybe 31yd) 'radius', with the shooter standing in the center.

Yes, I'm talking live birds. What I was thinking of the shooter would stand on the edge or outside the ring.

Competition where each shooter gets to shoot at 20-30 pigeons. The birds have to fall inside the ring to be counted. If birds make it outside the ring they are a lost bird.

In my experiance, it varies based on the individual ring. In the races (each round is called a "race") that I have shot you were 16 to 20 yards behind center box in the semi-circle of boxes, which sit on the edge of a 30 meter ring. Columbaire (hand thrown)is a little different set up because you don't want to shoot the thrower, unless he intentially pitches you bad one. Live pigeon shooting is a big time gambling game, with calcuttas, steep entry fees and all sorts of skulldugery if you are not carefull. The locations of the rings (there are a few around South Mississippi) are kept close to the vest to keep PETA, etc. out. The shoots are invitation only, but it is not too difficult to get an invite once you are known to be a "straight up guy" who keeps his mouth shut and pays his debts. At a big pigeon shoot you will a large number of present and former olympic shooters and NSCA/ATA All Americans.

Have some friends in Pennsylvania where this is big time stuff. Lotsa money won and lost on pigeon shooting. Rules for where gun hand is before throw and where bird drops. Usually big entry fees and lotsa side bets. Gets even more interesting when a streamer is tied to the birds legs. Supposed to make him fly more erratic.
Gun clubs there make this a big event. Sometimes held every other weekend with hundreds of shooters.

First post after reading for 3 months. Pigeon shooting can be either hand thrown or mechanical(Box Birds). I have shot in both. Box birds have five traps loaded with a pidgeon. You do not know which trap will release when you call for the bird. Initially the shooter is located 27 meters from the traps. The ring(actually a semi circle) is located 18 meters from the traps. You have two shots to kill the pidgeon before it reaches the ring's cicumference. If you kill five in a row you" slide" back to the 28 meter line, and continue to slide each five in a row you kill. If you miss you remain at your position. The first race I shot in 1983 was intimidating. I shot behind Grits Gresham, field editor for "Field and Stream", and right before Bob Brister, author of "Shotgunning, the Art and Science". I was proud of my Berreta over and under until I got their to find it to be by far the cheapest gun there. Purdys, Fabbris, and Holland and Holland were common. Be careful!

I have not decided on a date. I've got a lot
of work to do with a spot to set up a place to shoot.

One reason I would enjoy doing it is because all the press I've read about is how much peta hates it. I might even invite some of those peta nuts just to come watch me shoot birds that have been caged then released to be killed. I know it's bad of me to say so but I would get great joy in their misery.

Hell those nuts are trying to take milk out of my baby girls mouth.

It does sound like a good time, bust some birds then have a good ole pigeon eaten.

Most of the pigeons used are feral. Folks around who make a living trapping those nasty rascals. Not so sure about eating them though.
