Sunday, February 17, 2002. Waterfowlers who think that their local areas are becoming more crowded are probably right. New data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shows duck and goose hunters increased by 400,000 over the last decade, rising from 1.2 million in 1991-92 season to 1.6 million
in the 2000-01 hunting year. The estimated
harvest in l991-92 was 6.2 million ducks, or
5.2 ducks per hunter. The figures are being
touted by Ducks Unlimited and other groups as
great news for the sport, because of license
fees and excise taxes paid by hunters fund most conservation work. Others are wondering
if the dramatically increased harvest may be
contributing to recent disappointing seasons.
