i wondered what you fellows could tell me about these trees.... i bought 5 trees and set out today... these trees are 2 years old and suppose to bear acorns at 5 years of age. the deer are suppose to stand under them and wait on the nuts to drop...haha.... i also bought a gallon of acorns and planted to try my luck. some of these acorns were already sprouting.. planted them about 1 to 2 inches in the ground... planted alot around the Shack on high ground... have i wasted a day or am i on track ???? the trees didn't come cheap, the acorns did.....

judge jb, my uncle planted 60 of those trees a few years ago and 95% of them have produced acorns. And the saying about the deer waiting under the tree for the acorns to drop is true, they won't leave a tree once the acorns keep steady falling out of it. Judge,
Good job you will be happy. If you can go and get some more sawtooth oaks and set out. The farm services agency should have some to give away. I would with out fail build a fence around them. The deer will eat the top buds and the trees will never grow prpoerly. I planted some 7 years ago and they are 18' tall. The ones the deer eat on are just 5'.

good choice. you can usually get them through the forestry service pretty cheap. something like $25.00 for a 100. they do produce acorns fast.

Are you referring to Chestnut White Oaks? I believe there are 2 varieties. A swamp chestnut white oak and the chestnut white oak. The swamp variety bears very large acorns and once they begin to fall, the deer eat them up like candy. They tend to grow in bottomland/swampy terrain. They have leaves with a sawtooth pattern around the edges and I kinda figured that was what they were commonly referred to as.

Dutch Dog, sawtooth oak is a completely different and seperate species. The sawtooth oak is a great species for quick acorn production and a wildlife favorite.

I don't understand why my saw tooth has not attracted any deer. It has grown well since I planted it. There are starting to be a few acrons on it. Could it be because I have it in my front yard in the middle of town? Please help me with this problem. By the way judge, prune your trees and they will have a better shape. Jack

Shoot them sprigs on their first pass!

We've got some at our deer camp. They did produce quickly and the deer sure do like them.
