Picks of the Week

Postby lower14 » Thu Sep 01, 2005 8:38 am

Well, it's college pig time again, and here is the first installment of the official Lower14 Picks Of The Week (tm).

Wisconsin -2 vs. Bowling Green

This line amazes me. Yes, Bowling Green has the best QB in the country in Omar Jacobs, and they do have some history of success against BCS schools, but they also only have 12 returning starters, 6 on each side of the ball. Wisconsin lost all 4 of their D-linemen, but the secondary is all upperclassmen and experienced enough to give Jacobs problems. Plus, Wisconsin is at home, and Madison is a tough place for visitors to play.

Pittsburg -3 vs. Notre Dame

Two new coaches in a season opener. The more I look at this game, the more I think I shouldn't bet on it, but Notre Dame's secondary got ripped last year by anyone with a good arm, and Tyler Palko has a great one, and an NFL talent in Greg Lee to catch it. And Notre Dame's offense is still one year away from getting those guys to where they need to be. I can't see them scoring enough to keep this one that close.

NC State +5 vs. Virginia Tech

Marcus Vick has been out of football for a year and returns to find his first game against one of the best defenses in the countrty. Both of NC State's defensive ends are fast as hell and can contain the running game of Vick and the Hokies. NC State's offense ain't much, but if they can avoid the turnover problems they had last year, they'll keep this one very close. Big-time defensive game here, and even though Tech is out for revenge from last year's loss to the Pack, I see NC State winning outright.

Ole Miss +3 at Memphis

Memphis has one weapon - D'Angelo Williams, and Orgeron is a defensive line and linebacker specialist who has ample experience in planning how to shut down a running game. Despite the offensive abilities of Memphis, they don't have an experienced QB to take advantage of this situation this early in the season. Ole Miss won't score much, either, but they should win a close one.

Air Force +3 at Washington

Well, on paper, Air Force is listed as the home team, but since it's being played in Seattle, I'm giving Washington the home field advantage. Washington wasn't nearly as bad as last year's 1-10 record would indicate. They can't possibly tunr the ball over as much as they did last year, and their defense is solid. But, the two weaknesses of the defense - the D-line and the corners - are the weaknesses that a potent Air Force offense will exploit to hell and back. Air Force has all 5 O-linemen coming back, a more seasoned QB, and a solid ground game. Look for them to pound the ball over and over and over again. And, despite being more of a ground-oriented offense, they averaged 30 points per game and 425 yards of offense last year.

keep an eye on cinnncy annd oregon tonite

looking at the lines I would imagine they are inflated because of where the points fall cincy is -10 and oregon is -8.5, so if i remember correctly the true line is likely lower

e mich has one of if not the worst defenses in the country and in the rankings on the oregon and houston game oregon far outways houston on both sides of the ball
