Anyone ever built an unclejohns pirogue from the kit? I ordered the kit. I thought it'd be a good summer project since painting the decoys a couple of summers ago turned out to suck..

I have seen a couple Mallardchaser, Never tried to build one. I chose a Chapman piroque and saved myself the grief. I think his is the best on the market and priced to sell.

I just called and drove down and picked up two, saved myself $75.00 each savings on shipping. About a 6 hour round trip.

I have built two using the plans from Uncle John's. One was given to my brother. I kept the first one for myself and have killed a fair number of ducks from it. These were the first boats I have ever constructed, and I did the work by myself. It was a good project, and I would be interested in doing it again. My recommendations are to build your pirouge at least 12 or 13 feet long. Fourteen feet is ideal. Also, if you are not experienced with fiberglass, get someone to help you with that part of the work.

As for the Chapman pirouges, I hunted one day this year from a fourteen footer and found it to be very comfortable and nice. There are a couple of pirouges, however, that I like more than the Chapman.

A friend of a friend has four molds and makes pirouges on an as needed basis for employees, friends, etc.

Building your own boat is very rewarding. It is really a personal decision as to which you would prefer obtaining (creating) and hunting from.
