Need help identifying thing w/ feathers

Postby ruger0771 » Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:42 pm

I found four of these things running around in my fathers yard. I chased them down, and put them in a cage... thinking they were wood ducks.
I'm all excited about this cause I have been trying to find some wood ducks for our daughter for the last 3 months.

Anyway, I show them to Amanda(my girlfriend), who busts out laughing and says "hun, I'm pretty sure that's a goose"

Now she has been a "farm girl" all her life, and should know what she is talking about, but at the same time, she likes to give me a hard time, so I'm not sure if she's serious or not! :x

ANY input on what you think these things might be would be great!! I want to know if they are going to honk or quack! Thanks is advance!! :D

Postby lipsplitter » Sun Jul 17, 2005 8:56 am

hey man those are wood ducks and what kind of idiot are you to capture them and bring them in your house as much as we talk about duck production predator control and all the other issues about duck hunting in general and you come on here with pictures of baby ducks wanting them identified. and you say you got these for your kids what were you planning to do with them? if i knew who you were and where you lived i would call your local game warden and report your booty to him. and no i am not hiding behind a user name my name is Jimmy Barton 6015877330 if you have any questions or if you are offended call me otherwise go put the ducks back so that my kids and your kids can enjoy them in the future instead in your living room running around.

Whoa now! You have totally misunderstood this! Where my father lives there is NO water what so ever. I have already spoke with the Game warden, and told him the situation as to where I found them. Since he knew the area he knew that it was strange for them to be found where they were, IF they were in fact wood ducks. I know that they have to be turned back out into the wild(If they are wood ducks), but I'm not going to turn them back out in my fathers yard, as he lives on a busy highway, which again has NO water anywhere near!

As for 'robbing the mother duck'. I love how you have no idea what you are talking about, so you just ASSume that I pretty much chased the mother away to get the ducklings. There is NO WAY there was a mother duck ANY WHERE near these babies. And, yes, we looked.

What I meant by 'giving them to the kiddo' was this.... Where my girlfriend lives is right on the lake, so turning them loose there would be putting them back out into the wild, on water with other ducks, and ducklings. With hopes that if she continued to feed them(like she has done the other ducks and geese there) they would kinda stick around.

But yea, thanks so much for your replies  Maybe instead of attacking and threatening people on this board when they make a post, you should question their intentions!

Where there's a duck there's __________? A. WATER B. WATER C. WATER or D. WATER. Multiple Choice..take your time. Who are you trying to fool...Momma wood duck and Papa wood duck just happened to have a nest somewhere close to your dad's back yard with NO water for miles around. Go sell that $hit elsewhere.

Well I guess you just answered the age old question....Which came first..the Duck or the Egg?

That's where you TOLD him you found them....Well...
What about this???

Here folks are working hard, building wood duck boxes all over the S.E. United States so the wood ducks will have a chance at making a strong comeback. Here you are stealing some of their hard work and domesticating it on your girlfriends lake. Thanks for your help. Please refrain from further ventures in educating your daughter about wildlife and leave that to the experts.

This was my favorite part of his justification, and I tried ta get Wingman ta verify my opinion, but seein as how it's against the law to do what this numbnutz did, I think any real warden would have told him ta put the ducklets back where he freekin got them, or the warden would have picked them up himself.

Dude,

I think it is a fair assumption that you don't hunt and have not had much experience in the outdoors. The people who are regular members of this forum are avid waterfowl hunters and outdoorsmen. The reactions you have gotten are because the vast majority are also conservationist. They put in untold hours and money doing such things as DU, DW, and other things for the ducks so there will be ducks for our kids and our children's children.

When you come on this forum and ask "What's this thing with feathers" it belittles the ducks and the efforts of all who love them. Do the right thing and contact the MDWFP and let them tell you what to do with them. I don't know if they can be turned back into the wild at this point or not, but the MDWFP will. It will also be teaching your daughter alot more about conservation that having them in the living room.

My 2 cents.
