Calling All Duck Callers
Ducks Unlimited Seeks Regional and State Champs

RIDGELAND, Miss., July 1, 2005 — The 2005 Mississippi State and Delta Regional Duck Calling Championship will be Saturday, Aug. 6 at the 19th Annual Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza at the Mississippi Trade Mart in Jackson. Callers from surrounding states are invited to compete for the sanctioned regional title, as well as the unsanctioned youth and team calling contests.

Sponsored by Mississippi Ducks Unlimited and sanctioned by the World Championship Duck Calling Contest of Stuttgart, Ark., state and regional winners are eligible to compete in the world contest at the Wings Over the Prairie Festival on Nov. 25-26 in Stuttgart.

Longtime DU member Larry Simons is chairman of this year’s event and he expects some strong competition among several powerful contenders vying for state and regional titles. This contest usually attracts 10-12 Mississippi contestants and another 30 callers from neighboring states.

“The callers in the Delta region have the skill and talent to be world champions. Mike Smith, from Madison, Ala., was the Delta regional winner last year and he took sixth place in the world championship,” Simons said.

Simons said the popularity of duck calling attracts contestants who learned to call in the duck blind, as well as those who learned to call in the backyard.

“When we started several years ago almost all of the contestants were men with years of experience calling ducks in the field,” Simons said. “That’s all changed now. Women and children have proven to be fantastic callers. Their talent is tremendous. We have a youth category and have expanded this year’s event to include the popular team calling contest.”

The regional class competition begins at 1 p.m., followed by the state event. Callers can register until 1 p.m. at the competition. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third places in both the regional and state competitions. The unsanctioned events will begin with the youth contest at 10 a.m. and the team calling contest at 11 a.m.

Southern Beverage Co., Inc., Budweiser Distributors and Mean Mallard in Jackson are this year’s advertising sponsors, along with Mossy Oak of West Point.

With more than a million supporters, Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest and most effective wetland and waterfowl conservation organization. The United States alone has lost more than half of its original wetlands ¬− nature’s most productive ecosystem − and continues to lose more than 100,000 wetland acres each year.

Thanks for the invite Chad. I know you where directing that post towards me. I have given up comptetion calling. I have yet to find any real comp. in the last few years. So, I would like to attend as a observer or might even vol. as a judge. Thanks again

The team contest is a meat contest. Ronnie Raggio has been pushing for it for a good while now and finally talked them into it this year. It should be a BLAST! This deal just isn't for guys with their eye on Stuttgart anymore. Step up in the team meat contest and let's see what everyone has got! I hate it I can't make it this year.

Is that pretty much along the same guidelines as two-man meat comp? Just trying to get an idea of what routine setup to use.

That's pretty much it, all duck...all the time. Some folks loosely format it on a competition routine meaning some do a modified version of the hail early and will throw in some type of comeback deal in the middle. The rest is DUCK! I've seen folks use goose calls, drake mallard calls, be loud and all greetings, be soft and mostly feed and quacks. Rick and Robb are good ones to listen to. First they dang sure know real duck calling and second they've very successful in the meat comp thing.

And if your partner's call locks up...how fast can you move your tongue?
