So, is baseball over yet?

Postby webbmaster » Tue Jun 14, 2005 8:59 am

Based on my custom of only reading the headlines when it comes to college baseball, it appears that all the SEC teams are out. (actually, I'm not sure about TN- but who cares?.)

Baseball threads are now limited to one per week. You can post more than one per week IF the Cubs make the playoffs. If there is any name calling or reference to the '86 "dream" team, each person will be required to write a 500 word essay on why Alabama can claim 12 National Championships.

Now everyone can stop all the bickering and wrist slapping and put more effort into what really matters: college football.

So many questions...and only about 80 days to answer them.
I'll start....

1) Will Vanderbilt have back-to-back SEC victories in consecutive years since MSU is now off the schedule?
2) Will Kentucky coach Rich Brooks be fired in mid-season or quit in frustration?
3) Will Mark Richt and his dogs fall back to their rightful place as 3rd best in the East with the arrival of Spurrier and Meyer, while his squad will now consist of players not recruited by Jim Donnan?
4) Will Spurrier be able to put this system in place with far less talent than he ever had at Florida?
5) Will Phil Fulmer come to SEC media days this year?
6) What game during the season will Urban Meyer finally figure out that he's not in the Mountain West conference (or whatever crappy conference Utah was in)
7) Who is going to take Matt Jones place at Arkansas, and how many times will we hear that as an excuse when they lose?
8 ) Which game during the season will the unrealistic LSU fans realize that they hired a coach who really had a mediocre record at a mediocre school?
9) Will Shula be able to coach like he is in the SEC instead of the municpal pee wee league?
10) What will Tubbys most repeated sound byte be this year: "..well, IF we still had Carnell and Ronnie Brown..." or "...I'm not going anywhere.."
11) Should I pull for Croom to do very well this year in the event Shula tanks it in, thereby resulting in Crooms long overdue return to Ttown?
12) Can Ogreogon build a dynasty like they did at USC, or is the cold, hard truth too much for him to comprehend?

Croom being good enough will not be the question. It will be if he can get the talent he needs to come to starkpatch or not. An ESPN reported once stated that trying to get a top player to come to starkvegas was like trying to sell canned heat in Texas during the summer. Thats the cold hard facts for us state fans. Do you really think after Bama shafted him when they hired shula he would go back. Just curious??

Yes he'd come back. Especially when Ozzie Newsome takes over as AD.

But I'm really starting to wonder about his coaching ability. Hell, he should have been knocking them dead in recruiting, but he hasn't.

I'm fully aware that Starkcrap is a tough sell, but being the first black coach in the SEC should help more than youd' like to admit when it comes to luring in quality athletes.

I never said being black = success on the field. (not sure if you are refering to me)

My point was that it should more than help in the area of recruiting...especially in a place like Starkville. Coaching is a whole differfent ball of wax. And quite honestly, the jury is still way out on that one.

black, green, orange, grape.. who cares what color the coach is.. we've got a crappy traditon, an ugly stadium, and an a rather ugly city.. those are the things that hamper us the most!!!!

Could be that some of these quality athletes are afraid of the discipline (real or imagined) they may (or may not) face???

Can't say that I disagree with all those statements.

But, I still think Croom should be able to recruit much better even under those conditions.

Now that we have answered question #11, let's move on...

Jury is still out on Shula too.

And I'd imagine the conversation would go something like this:

AD Ozzie: "Hey Sly, great season over there. I was wondering, would--
Sly: "Be there tomorrow."

Croom has a no-compete clause in his contract, even if he does decide to leave MSU he cannot go to a sec school.

You really think a no compete clause will hold up in court? Not to mention, money talks....

As I said, its not like anyone is sold on Croom yet. So its all speculation.
