hard thundershowers comming in ....

so watch out if u are hunting because of the flood water in the delta moving snakes out of their den,,,,where do they go....high ground that is warm......under your boat..or
on top of your blind....so please watch out..

it has happened to me...
also watch out for your dog...

i have been diggin a few snakes out of the beaver huts and dams... really wish things were different.. as i get older i learn more each year... don'y know if i like what i learn or not...haha....

My buddy and I killed 7 cotton mouths last saturday in the Coldwater bottoms and the temp was in the upper 30's that morning. That was a first for me and if I hadnt seen it for myself I wouldnt believe it.

Funny you should mention snakes. Yesterday (tuesday) we killed a copperhead swimming around. He was EXTREMELY sluggish. I picked him up with a stick several times trying to get a look at his eyes (looking for cats eyes). I am no expert on snakes markings and since it has been quite a while since I had seen one I wasn't sure. I thought it was just an old banded water snake, but NOPE it was definately a copperhead. A buddy of mine that I told that to said he had also seen a copperhead in another part of this particular place the day before. This snake wasn't the least bit aggressive, in fact he was barely even moving. Every time I dropped it back into the water it was like it was in slow motion watching it "right" itself and begin to swim off.

Ive killed 7 or 8 this year around Coldwater, maybe if every hunter kills a couple then they wont be so bad this summer. I know i wouldnt mind not seein any.

more dangerous now....snakes are cold blooded therefore they are the same temp as their surroungings, can be warm lying under a boat...but very slow in cold water..

and that what makes them so dangerous...they are not in their normal habitat...run out of their den buy high water...and now suning in warm weather...in jan,,,,

be careful because they will not move out of your way...like they do most of the year...

when you reach up to climb in your blind....
stick your head out shooting hole, reaching to turn over your boat, grabing a piece of fire wood,

I learned from an extremely reliable source that a fellow duck hunter killed a 5 1/2 foot rattelsnake in the greentree area at the O'Keefe Management area on January 10th. He was coiled up on the opposite side of the log this gent was sitting on. He brought the snake out and had it in his truck. That was when my friend saw the beast. I believe I would find a better way to confirm the Poisonous status of a snake than getting close enough to look him in the eyes. With the exception of the Corral Snake all the U.S. snakes are pit vipers. They all have the following characteristics. Triangular Head, Heat Sensing Pits, and they are usually a fatter and shorter than non poisonous snakes. Non poisonous snake look more long and slinder.

my dog and I are going hunting in the Coldwaters bottoms tomorrow A>M>. Sounds like I better be looking down instead of up.
