Reason for the bad season !!!!!

Postby treblA » Wed Jan 16, 2002 9:20 am

Hello all, new to the board.

I know the reason we are having a bad season. My wife bought me a brand new Browning Automatic Gold Hunter 3 1/2 for Christmas. The only thing it has been used for so far is to break ice the weekend we went to the Delta National Forrest. I hope to see if I can at least SCARE a greenhead with it before the season is over.

Good Luck All

treblA, I hear there was a gadwall spotted some where in Tallahatchie county. Maybe we ought to go and try to hunt him!

Bull...Naw, I don't hold DU accountable for this poor season, or last. Ya'll give them way too much credit for being able to impact the population and migration of ducks and geese. Fact is, most of the folks who are salaried DU folks (not the local volunteers) I don't credit with having much more sense that to be able to pour piss out of a boot! I quit DU five years ago over one issue...they forgot that hunters are the bread and butter of their operation. They got lost in the glitter of the corporate world and forgot their roots. I rejoined this year because I have, over the last two years, seen a move back to the center with the new management. DU has never claimed to be anything but a habitat organization. In the early years of my involvement (served on two local committees, one in MS and one in GA, for a total of 12 years starting in 1974) it was clearly noted in every part of the organization that DU was strictly conservation oriented and they would not become involved in the political traffic of the hunter/anti-hunter thing. I kinda respected that, as long as they did not back away from hunters and not respect them. About 8-9 yrs ago, I saw a significant shift from the respect of hunting as a very significant part of the overall conservation picture. I wrote them a letter telling them so, and quit! Seems that things are coming back to where they used to be now. If you look at their publications, you see far more articles and publicity for hunters and hunters' rights. That being said, I respect Delta Waterfowl far more as a pure, cut frill to the bones waterfowl conservation group.
They are the best educated, most dedicated group I have found with a primary interest in what is good for ducks.

I've said it before; I'm saying it again...there is nothing wrong with this season that 5-10 inches of snow in the midwest wouldn't fix! Boys, it was 57 degrees in South Dakota last week! No duck in his right mind is going to leave all that food and soft water to come get his butt shot in MS and AR! "Let me see," said Mr. Mallard. "I can stay here in this mild weather, eat all these fine groceries, and chase these thousands of saucy girl ducks, where no one is hunting me; or, I can fly a thousand miles and do the same thing and get my butt shot at every day by the roboduck hordes. Hmmm." And you wonder why you have a poor duck season this year?! Give the weather its due respect. Sun, moon, stars, tides, floods, tornados, cold fronts snow...them's some powerful things, man. DU can't hold a candle to the power of those elements when it comes to ducks!

So far, Crow is the leading candidate for the much coveted "post of the year" award with the grand prize of a free vienna sausage dinner at Judge JB's shack.

YEA CROW- got a little humor back on the board, took all the crap thats been posted, all season and rolled it into one.

The jury's still out on my views on DU.
Although i am leaning away from them, i still serve on the local committy.

Eventhough we are all pissed at the season , and blame the reason for the season on everything but the kitchen sink, you hit it on the head ,WHEN ITS 50 DEGRES IN NORTH AND SOUTH DAKOTA IN JANUARY, THEY AINT FLYING SOUTH...PERIOD.

So ill say again...are the crappie bitting yet??

there's a real bad feeling in the air about DU in this area (Delta) mainly among the farming community. In fact all of our banquets were cancelled. I am real interested in what others think. I for one am a memeber of DU, mainly for the magazine, but shifted the majority of my support dollars to Delta Waterfowl. In addition to their conservation efforts DU also seems to do a good job of recruiting hunters which can't be bad for any state. Interested in some information possibly some facts about what DU did to make everyone so mad?

It's clear to me that there are several causitive factors involved in this poor season. There are too many black panthers in MS, who were, by the way, reintroduced and fed by Ducks Unlimited at the urging of the northern states who were upset because we got an extended season and they had all this grain that they couldn't sell. The panthers are all banded tamies, and only "real" panther hunters can find them. Only one or two folks can find them and their customers...I mean, their friends who offer unsolicited testimonials as to why they are the only ones who can see them, say they see them all the time. We ordinary "topwater rubberhead" hunters can't see the panthers because there is not enough snow for tracking and, you know those damn sneaky yankees are shortstopping the snow, but someone has a tape to prove it, I hear. The yankees spread rumors about the MS population of panthers while the ducks were up there nesting and the ducks made a westward shift in the migration route to avoid them. The weird migration pattern caused a disease which reduced the population and the USFW is trying to hide that from the hunters by keeping the liberal bag limit and encouraging hunters to just go out and enjoy the sunrise; that's why they sell you a hunting license and not a killing license, you know! I heard the yankees were trying to get the Feds to sell a "watching" license in the southern tier states, but Trent Lott got involved and they all were shaking in their boots because he said he would hold up the funding for their snowplows if the license wasn't an "extended watching license." It's a plot, man; I'm telling you, it's a damnably clever plot! Did I mention that those damn out-of-staters don't help anything by coming in and taking up the spots where local boys usually think they could see the panthers? Let me see now, where was I..."It was a dark and stormy night."

Time for my medication, now.
