Flying North?
Anyone else noticed a lot of birds flying north? Over half the birds i see are flying north. I took a compass to make for sure, and they are for sure headed that way.
Flying North?
Hell......why does that surprise you?.......news travels fast, 'round here. 'Seems they got ahold of some rumor 'bout the Feds dumpin' corn from the bellies of C-130's somewhere in Illinois!! (Gotcha!) I just LOVE this forum! BWAAAHAHAhahahah!!! I actually found a site where some tree hugger group was dropping food by copter back in the 80's. I don't hold much water in the feeding up north deal. I have searched the net extensively, and have found only a few sites reffering to feeding stations on refuges. This season has no doubt been a crappy one, and has tempers flared. I do think it is possible that they are feeding the ducks since du got envolved with the refuges. I think it is more possible becuase i believe du is geared more towards northern hunters. I do not think it is feesable that feeding has held pretty much the whole migration. The old saying is "seeing is believing", so i won't until i see it. I think this whole argument would die if the yanks would quit getting people fired up about it (poking fun at the rednecks).

Well, can you really blame them? The reason they poke fun is 'cause we such GOOD MATERIAL.....we appear dumb as DIRT, sometimes (typically evidenced by such rediculous assumptions based on speculation and ignorance) .....and until we convince them otherwise, they'll probably maintain their present impression.
The reason Mark Twain (Sam Clemens) was so successful was because he emphasized how rediculous human nature can be, to the point that one can't help but laugh about it. His subjects?......Southerners!

Well, I heard the army was involved, too! They been dropping all those MRE's to those Afghans, after all. And, it's just a small step to replace beanie weenies and spaghetti/meat sauce with corn! Think about it!

Ant. - I've read most of his stuff. Did you see the piece on tv last night. It was excellent. Part II comes on tonight @ 7.
Remember when the banned one was here? He tried to copy "dialect".

I am a member of DU but I here that they are actually the ones that are feeding up north. I sure hope not because if that is so then our allie and main conservation group is selling the south short. And down here in the promise land is where the ducks are suppose to winter and feed. Do these people not realize that they may be altering migration routes which may prove very detremintal in harsh winters in the future.
Flying North?
What else could this season produce
Flying North?
No Meeka, I lost out to 'Fear Factor', 'Third Watch', and some other show my wife HAD to watch. 'Don't get many opportunities to view educational TV.....something i really need (bein' a 'Southerner' and all).
'Bottom line fellas......there's no one to blame for the fact that we don't have any ducks. If anything, we should be upset with 'self' for having anticipated great things or (at the very least) an average year. The result......abject consternation and the search and condemnation of anybody or anything, thought to be remotely responsible for our severe disappointment. i.e. Along with high hopes comes the potential for disappointment. And the DU conspiracy continues. First it was DU against the farmers. Now, DU is feeding ducks in the north to alter migration of ducks to prevent them from wintering in the south. Good grief!! What next? DU controlling duck migration with mind altering duck bands?? DU in conspiracy with Corps of Engineers to dry up the south?? DU secretly controlled by PETA?? Some of you folks need to get a grip on reality. Think duck migration factors: weather, water, food, weather, water, weather, food, weather---did I mention weather?? It ain't rocket science.

ole trashduck I mean bufflehead, The point I do realize that feeding up north will not change migration patterns alone but with the mild winter and plenty of water it sure might. The ducks that have only migrated this year (young ducks) may not make it to traditional wintering grounds and won't know any different. No, I don't know all that much about ducks but I do know alot of older more experienced hunters who do know more than I and if they think this is a problem then I have to listen to experience. I'm am sorry if I ruffled your old diving duck feathers but what I was stating was an opinion. There is your grip on reality.
Flying North?
O.K.
I have to jump in on this one. Let's think about this in mathematical terms. The sheer number of metric tons of corn it would take to stop the whole of the Mississippi flyway migration is mind bogling. Ole Bufflehead is right weather, water, and food sources control all things pertaining to the migration. It would take hundreds of millions to pay for the corn and the logistics to get it to where it would need to be.
Can we please stop saying that people are mass feeding the ducks and that it's the reason for the poor season. Some seasons are good others are bad so we need to take it like men and quit making everybody look stupid in the eyes of anyone who happens upon this board.

FYI:
Ducks also migrate regardless of food, weather, and water. Example: early migrants like bluewing teal, pintail, and shoveler.
Why?
Because based on the diurnal cycle their internal clock tells them its time.

Correct Dos Gris. They follow a circannual(or yearly) cycle that doesn't soley rely on outside factors (i.e. snow, cold, hunting pressure, etc) to cause migration. Let's hope they hurry up and decide to come on down!

This season must really be a bad one for you southern boys to spend this much time on a computer talking about ducks. In this thread alone you have discussed the possibilities of DU short stopping ducks, DU supporting the northern hunter more than the southern hunter, migration patterns, weather or lack there of, Afganistan, T.V. shows, etc.
If it is any comfort the weather in Illinois has gotten colder this week and snow is predicted for this weekend. Most of the water in the area is frozen and has been for a couple of weeks. Hence, you boys should be getting some new birds soon, especially the northern part of Mississippi.
I must admit it has been quite humorous reading the posts lately.
