The one who sits remotely on a porch on the front of the blind as a pair of mallards sift throught the tupelo gums and light 10 feet from him. He quietly shivers with anticipation waiting on the group of 20 to fall in 90 seconds later and the five (5) guns to blast away. When he's released he swims between 2 dead ducks on their backs "riding the bicycle" and heads out of sight into deep button willow cover to retrieve a strong swimming cripple. After climbing the icy ramp into the blind and delivering the cripple (banded btw) he goes back in for the "bicyclers" and then retrieves the other 4 dead ducks scattered amongst the decoys for a total of 7 unassisted retrieves from a single volley.

This may sound like fantasy to you, but I've seen it with my own eyes, and it is a thing of beauty. I get chills and tears in my eyes thinking about it. THAT dog sleeps in bed with my wife and me, and I have serious doubts of ever having another like him.

I have been there and done that; and after putting that one to sleep at age 13 1/2, I have tried twice to reproduce that. Sir, to my regret I have been unable to do so. I always heard that a man has 1 GOOD dog in his lifetime. I'm afraid mine has passed.

My ole lab turned 14 this past november.. never has he missed a trip or tore the pen up too go... but the other day as i went to let him out of the pen for another hunt after several days hunting, he lay in his hay as if too say, i'm just to tired to make it this morning... i know when it is time to retire a dog, and his retirement has now started... i'll just take care of him and let him hunt when he wants....

Funny the judge said something about his dog tearing up the pen to go hunting. Friday I took one of my dogs hunting. The other was PO'd. Tearing at his crate til I returned. This morning I got up at 3:30 to go. I looked in the garage. The dang dog slept on the back of my 4 wheeler so as not to get left. Needless to say I took him. Got home and my wife said the other howled and tore at his crate. Not a good thing to come home to. Now the wife is PO'd. Guess I sleep on the 4 wheeler tonight. Unfortunately, neither dog got much work as the action was slow. All the birds I have been singing have been singing FREE BIRD (Fly High O Free Bird)

Judge,
Sounds like you need a puppy, and you know there are plenty of folks on here who can put you on a good one. I'd love to see you get involved with one of the retriever clubs. I've also got a 7 month old puppy that I need to be training. Let me know when you get another dog - I'd love to train with you. Any chance of that happening?
