Went and set up on an old catfish pond surrounded by thirty or so more around you know where. (Wingman's stomping ground I believe. Anyway a place that is advertised more often than need be)
Got there about three pm. Shot one gadwall at four thirty another five minutes later and a greenhead at five. At five fifteen the flood started! I don't know how long we could still see but the ducks came in full force. Never seen anything like it!! By the hundreds. I have seen this on videos but never in person. The pond was mostly covered with brush except for about 1/4 in front of us that was open. They were landing anywhere they could. In the brush in the open. I don't know if any more ducks could have gotten in!
Unreal!
I was proud of myself, I didn't fire a shot after legal hours were over. I nearly had to beat my partner over the head to keep him from shooting though. I guess it is kind of hard watching all those greenheads and gads land in the dekes after firing one shot all evening, missing, having your partner back you up and kill your duck! He got skunked. Why yes of course I was doing the calling and calling the shots
Anyway, this changed my mind regarding the sorry season.
We were talking later and both of us asked the question "where in the Heck did all those ducks come from?"
Good luck to all. It's not over yet!

Wood ducks darn sure can tell time. They know "if we wait till dark to fly, it will be O.K."
