Need info on lab training

Postby BigGun » Sun Jan 13, 2002 3:14 pm

My huntin buddy has a beautiful female choc. lab. She is almost a year old and on her first hunting season. She is really intense about chasing small birds and wounded ducks across fields. Her problems are: Jumps out of the blind after we shoot, Starts whining and moving around when she sees ducks in the air(can be bothersome when ducks are directly over blind and looking), Cannot find a bird when it is completely dead and not moving. He doesn't want the expense of sending her to school. Anyone have tips on how to correct these problems.

Big Gun, you dont have PROBLEMS,This is quite noraml for young dogs, in the first season with out any "blind manners".

ONE TRICK-Build a platform to sit on the ground that is as big as your dog perch thats on your duck blind. have the dog sit on it,command SIT. Have a buddy toss a bumper out, 20 yards or so, MAKE HER SIT, DO NOT LET HER LEAVE until you say "back" or call her name to be released.DONT USE A DEAD DUCK. If she tries to break, let her have it, and when you give her a swat, say SIT.

The goal is not to get off the platform untill told. This may take a week or so,if yu do it everyday. Don't over-do the presure, she must understand what you want and at the same time enjoy what she is doing.

Once she is doing good on this, let your buddy shoot a gun while throwing the bird.
The gun shot will be a big temptation, dont let her break.Dont let her go until told.

After she is doing this pretty good, let him
throw a dead duck.(be sure too keep ALL the duck you killed this year). She will love getting the duck, she will start "looking" for the duck, and learn what to look for to find it, if you would like, throw some decoys out on the ground. She will learn what to look for and what not to do.

Once all this is going good, do in the water.

I dont know about the whinning when she see's the birds flying, they just get excited. This may go away with age.

one more thing, dont ever swat her while she is in the platform, that is her safe place, only when she is off.

BigGun if you are serious about correcting the problem take these guys advice. It all sounds good, training with the guys in the club will be your biggest asset as I have found most everybody in the "dog" community is friendly and willing to share good information. Remember everybody's dog was a puppy once. GOOD LUCK!

NEVER, let her break, and get the bird. If she steps off platform, git her ass, make her sit on platform, and YOU go get the bird. Not your bird boy, YOU. Not getting the object of her desire is better than the swat, and with the combo of the swat and no fetch, she will get the point immediately. You wont fix this before next duck hunt, so tie her up. Fix this in feburary, AFTER duck season.
Whining in blind? HUSH (or quiet, or no noise) means HUSH. Where you are makes no difference. HUSH and SIT are basic commands, that any dog needs to comply with 100%. You wont fix HUSH in a duck blind, no matter how much you pound. HUSH has to be consistent, 100% of the time. Dog makes noise, you make her HUSH. Tap under muzzle and say HUSH. Until she understands. Every day, every time. If you say HUSH, she gets quiet. Only then can you expect it in a duck blind to have meaning.
Old saying, if you cant get it at home, you cant get it in field.
Get involved with our club, or another, and you'll see how much fun dog training can be. travis
