Roto Dove - I kid you not

Postby AccountingDucks » Mon Jul 16, 2001 7:57 am

I just got my Q.U. magazine and was flippin thru the Dove section, when I saw the the picture in the advertisement - ROTO DOVE. What in the world is our sport coming too, when you need a battery operated ROTO DOVE to shoot doves with. Talking about messing up tradition. And how about starting the kids off on a bad foot by taking them to field with ROTO DOVES. I bet most of us got our start hunting out on the dove field, first being a bird dog for your father, then finally getting old and big enough to shoot. Learned a lot about tradition, hunting, sportmanship, and ethics dove hunting. Boys don't show up at one of my shoots with one, cause I'am sure it would get mistaken for the real thing.

You know that when you think about hunting as we know it today one of the biggest changes is that hunting has gone from passing something to another generation or family member or friend to a big money making machine. I think thats why we see some of the things we have out there today.

Do yall remember when your daddy or family friend would kill a big buck and he would ride around with it strapped to the hood or in the back of his truck. Man times and people have changed. Have we changed or have we let money change us?

I recall my grandpa telling stories of his hunting(either in the woods or sitting in a field in his car or truck) party shooting anything that walked and it was a thrill to kill a doe and if you shot a buck it didn't matter if it was a spike or a 8 point a buck was a buck. A deer was a deer. I wish it was still like that today but again money has changed all of that. As well as groups that try to take our rights has hunters.

A friend of mine and I saw one (actually a whole stack) at a local hunting store on Friday. We both almost fell over, and we both came very close to giving it up all together. Unbelievable! All I could do was shake my head and walk away.

The spinning wing dove decoy is obviously designed to attract pidgeons so that they can be fleeced. The robo-crow, robo-turkey and robo-hunter-wanna-be will no doubt be next. I never thought that dove decoys made any diffence anyway, at least as compared to the effect of natural feed with water nearby.

I think it is Miracle Duck that came out with the dove and pigeon rotos last year. I dove shoot in a private field and we use 6-12 geese silos to attract the doves. Believe it or not, they do attract the birds as they are easily seen and look as if they have found a feeding area, which pulls the doves over the set-up. Farm pigeons have flown over, also. Works for us!!

Ya know, I can understand a Mojo Mallard,:eek [I}Oh, god....) but what's the deal with a Mojo Ringneck?

I guess there's enough of a demand in using them in 'diver' hunting, too.

We saw them at the GOF in Memphis last month.

We kinda fell over ourselves.

I know on our fields due to the raptors and coyotes that this thing might actually spook'em from the field.
