Don Miller's post on MS panthers made me go dig up this email I got a few weeks ago.

Take it for what it is worth.....the last line says it all.

Don't mess with a mule!
"These pics came from a guy in AZ. Yes, the mule killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after one of the dogs.

The cat ambushed them, and the mule tossed his rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not. Unfortunately, it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics.

The mule finally stomped the cougar to death after biting and throwing it around like a rag doll.

The dogs wouldn't even come close until the mule settled down.
<pic1>
the cat was still alive here and trying to fight back
<pic2>
the mule stomped the cat then pinned it to the ground and bit the heck out of the dead cat several more times.
<pic3>
the cat was pretty much dead by now then mule picked up the cat again whipped it into the air again then stomped the dead cat again for good measure!
<pic4>
note the dog audience.... Gives new meaning to the phrase "BAD booty".

I don't think it's doctored. If you'll notice there are dogs in the background and the saddle and gun scabbard on the mule. This tells me that the cat was probably treed and shot out and then later they put the dead carcass out there for the mule to do his thing. Interesting pics none the less............

Thats kinda what I was thinking - only that he was cornered in a gully or something - the terrain looks to be treeless. The author admits shots were fired.

To me it is also feasible that the dogs could have run the cat until he gave out and then the mule got in a sucker punch to the cat's head with a back hoof. I had a cousin killed by a single kick to the head from a horse - don't know why the same couldn't happen to a cat.

i could believe those pictures. A couple of years ago a man from Hamilton was alomost killed when he was attacked by a mule. The mule bit him and stomped him till he was out. The man barely made it and the mule got shot, but they can be very aggressive animals if you seem a threat to them.

if it is a fake somebody took a lot of time to make it look good.
pay attention to the shadows and the dust flying in the first and last pics.

Could a mule ride in a 16' war egale. Of course I would keep it on a leash at the landing.

Discussed this with a friend who knows digital photos. We think these pictures were probably taken with a disposable 35mm camera, then digitally scanned at a fairly low resolution, but that the images themselves are true.

The part that is questionable is to what degree was the cat alive when the mule got ahold of it. :?
