I home-made this deal last season for shallow water hunts. Its a duck decoy attached to a length of 1" square tubing at the rear of the keel. About a foot or so down the square tubing is an eye bolt. At the front tie on spot on the decoy is where I attached the string...that string is then ran through the hole in the eye bolt and then back to our blind location. When I pull the string the duck is pulled head first under water appearing as if it is feeding. You can really make that thing splash around if you want to. Actually we made 2 of them, only had a limited amount of steel tube available....the shorter one wasn't long enough to get drove in the mud deep enough to keep it from pulling out. If I was gonna make another one I'd make its depth adjustable and make it at least 4'.

Oh yeah and steel cable attached to the keel instead of the string and make the first 2 to 3 feet cable...well past where it went through the hole in the eye bolt.....it wore the string out very regular...kinda got frustrating

We made us a home made duck camp. Stillts, gaslight, picture pump for water. Sure many people have buit camps before ( how else would they get built) but none of us had any experience with building. We would build as we could afford and no memberships. If you do not pitch in with lumber and labor yo booty do not hunt. it is nothing spectacular but for a few young men it was a great and still produces great memories

I am working on one for next year. It's still very sketchy at this point. I want to simulate a duck dropping into the water. My thoughts so far are using a mounted drake in the cup position on a 10 ft pole with a stiff spring at the bottom. Attach a string at the top of the pole and run it through a eye in the water and then to the blind. You can pull the pole down to simulate the duck hitting the water. I've got all year to work on it. I think it will help to get those shy birds in. Any ideas would be helpful.

And am currently working on my first duck call!

Dont know if anyone else has ever done this, but I made a pretty effective layout blind out of a 55gal. drum. Just cut the drum in half lengthways then bolt and silicone it together. After that i ziptied some hog wire on it and ran a bungee cord down the top to make it pop open. I also bolted two pieces of small angle iron on one side to push into the ground and keep it from rolling. It's probably an old trick ,but new to me this year so I thought I'd share. Gotta love the off season........always something to tinker with.

Mud motor, design it to haul on the back of the four wheeler so we could carry into the bottom to the boat then motor from there. Had one stolen last year while still mounted on the wheeler. Tha idoit is probably still wondering why the wheeler sank when he tried to cross the lake with the motor on the back.

So far all I have are some cork decoys I carved and a jerk string but I hope to build my own boat within the next year or so. Here's a picture of a successful day with my canvasback decoys.
