Re: Quick access handgun safe
Been doing a little research tonight. Seems Fort Knox are the best for mechanical lock. Originally was thinking about going with a biometric one but not so sure after some of the research I have done. Seems to be issues when people try to access them in a panic, and getting finger prints in just right.

I always wondered how those would work in a hurry as well. It's gotta be just right and nobody is gonna be calm when they need to get a gun out in a pinch.mshunter77 wrote:Been doing a little research tonight. This is kind of random but I guess could affect that type of safe as well. My daughter is in a daycare and they use finger print scanners to allow you to check your child in and out. When she first started I had my finger scanned so I would be in their system and be able to drop her off or pick her up. After a few weeks, my finger prints would no longer register in their system. Lady told me that happens with a lot of parents who spend a lot of time on the computer for work. Typing more of less wears your finger prints down I guess. Never heard of such but I guess it makes sense. And if their system is that sensitive, I would think that those safe boxes wouldn't be near as sensitive and may fowl up easier than that. Just something to think about.

Yeah basically most experts say the technology is just not good enough on the safes yet to be reliable yet.msudawg8087 wrote:I always wondered how those would work in a hurry as well. Re: Quick access handgun safe
I had access to a building once based on a fingerprint scanner. They must have scanned my print in a half-dozen times, and it never worked right. I always thought it was because of coming on/off insulin, and retaining or not retaining a little water making fingers swell or not. I would NEVER trust a biometric lock to work when my life depended on it.

If you never take your gun off your hip, you never need a quick access safe.

Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

I have the Hornady RFID gun safe on my night stand. Haven’t had to use it in a pinch yet (and hope I don’t) but has worked great just getting into it to get my handgun.

I've got a hornady rfdi, as well. it fits well cabled around the frame under my seat and is fairly sturdy. we have a gun vault mv-500 in my wife's car and it isn't as tightly fit together, so it could be fairly easily compromised with a decent sized pry bar/large screw driver...given a little more "stick-to-it-ness" than a quick smash and grab type lowlife.

Re: Quick access handgun safe
I have the Gun Vault that has the 4 number access code, not biometric. This particular one mounts on the bedside dresser (or under a desk) and opens downward for a grab and go situation. It is pretty handy and even has an interior light that turns on when the door opens. $170 or so.

I use The Gun Box. I have 3 of them.

I've got a GunVault on the night stand with my Glock in it. I've got a Hornday rfid shotgun safe mounted over the door in my walk in closet with a 590A1.

Hmmm I like the idea of the shotgun over the door. May have to buy that next.Seymore wrote:I've got a GunVault on the night stand with my Glock in it. I've got a Hornday rfid shotgun safe mounted over the door in my walk in closet with a 590A1.

Re: Quick access handgun safe
To those with the RFID safes...
Does Hornady have a RFID ring available similar to that offered by Gunbox? I dont see one online, only a bracelet that that i will never wear.
Can the Gunbox ring be programmed to work with the Hornady safe?
Can any 3rd party RFID device be programmed to work with both these safes?

Contents Include: RAPiD® Safe, Wall Power Supply, RFID Wristband, two RFID Stickers, RFID Key Fob, two Circular Barrel Keys, Security Cable.
I don't see a ring listed (and one didn't come with my rapid safe), but that doesn't mean that one isn't available (or at least in the works).
