I am on well water at camp, am only there on weekends during duck season and probably an additional 1 weekend each month.
Im looking at a whirlpool salt system water softener but the model im looking at is going to cramp my pump house or be really close (18" wide x 44 " tall).
What are those of you in a similar situation using.
Thanks in advance.

My in laws had one on their home well, I think it was a Culligan, but it was that size as well.

We have a camp filtration system that includes a water softener. I could put you in touch with the fellow that installed it if you like? Whatever you do for your installation, be sure and install a series of bypass valves in case something fails so you’re not left without water at all.
Water softener in our camp does a pretty good job but it is not quite the same quality water that we get at home. I personally don’t feel like it’s a problem or bad quality but I’m not the most picky discriminating person in the world when it comes to water softener.

I was thinking you need a filter system. If it needs to be bigger than what the current pump house can hold, we can build a bigger better pump house no problem.

I don't think the bleach will stop the rust / iron that is probably your main concern.
I kinda doubt there is a septic tank. But not sure where the outlet is either.

I have a septic tank...........I know because i have a breaker for an aerator that happens to not work.
I know rust and iron will always be a problem till i get the water conditioned...........its just more $ than i'm wanting to shell out right now.

What's a system like that cost to buy and have installed? Is it something that a fairly mechanically inclined person can do themselves?

About $375 is as low as i have seen them but they go up to over a thousand depending on how much water you are processing.
Its simple plumbing with pvc, connectors, etc.
