Duck Numbers

Postby DoublePslayer » Fri Nov 18, 2016 8:05 am

Just an FYI to everyone, but a friend of mine flew the duck survey for MDWFP this past week, and said there are not enough ducks in the delta to shake a stick at. The only concentration of any number that he saw were on some private land in Tallahatchie county, and those weren't anything to write home about.

The dept should have waited until this front came through and then flown their survey.

Better yet they should fly the survey again this week. See what effect the recent
Cold front had on the duck numbers

I think he said he does it twice a month. But they may have another pilot or company that does the other half.

Oh there is someone with the dept flying pretty regularly, you can bet that. How else do they know about all that knocked down grain and manipulated duck holes?

Nosey neighbors, pissed off ex-landowners/leasees, disgruntled former employees/business partners, fellow law-abiding hunters? There's no shortage of people willing to turn someone in for baiting when provided with the proper motivation.

I think the duck survey is flown 4 times each winter.

However Corn Patrol flies every day before and after lunch.

Stay straight down there. ;)

Whether or not they actually fly twice a day or not, it's a shame they (MDWFP, USDA, USFWS) spend money on "things" whatever they be, yet they don't have the money to run the pumps on the GTR's. As if there are any ducks to use them right now but not the point.

Delta Wildlife actually helps pay for the surveys, which are conducted 4 times a year. Here is a link to the survey page: http://www.mdwfp.com/wildlife-hunting/w ... ports.aspx

Glad I've got a dozen or so coveys that I can shoot.

Wild birds? Dozen coveys?? Damn the state needs to hire you to help them figure out how to grow "the gentleman's bird".

Got setters or pointers??

The Tallahatchie Refuge is pumped up that I can see from the highway. I saw two ole boys scouting it out yesterday morning about daylight as i passed by. I rolled the window down and yelled Quack Quack a couple of times as i passed by. :D

I would love to see those pumps run. The first 6" rain last fall soaked in the ground, thank goodness, because most of the boards weren't even in the DU structures or the GTR structures. The only one that had boards in was Sunflower GTR and a couple of structures the beavers dammed up. I put the rest in all of the little structures in the woods and caught the next 3" rain. The state takes care of Sunflower GTR; the FS is supposed to be taking care of the rest.

Don't get me started on the atv roads not being maintained. I'm gonna have permanent back problems from those.

Now the State does do a good job of pumping up three other WMA's, and if you've noticed over the last year, we've been tightening up on enforcement at some of those.

I don't expect the complaining to end, though. Some folks can never be satisfied.
