Utility trailers

Postby stang67 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 4:29 pm

What are you guys paying for a well-built 5x10 utility trailer these days? The name brand ones are > $1000 from a few minutes searching online, and the ones using tubing instead of angle are around $1200.

Any must-haves on a trailer that y'all can recommend? Anybody fooled with the bi-fold gates? I'm liking the idea of less wind drag but have no idea of how much of a PITA they may be. This also has me considering a dovetail. Anybody ever had a 5x10 with a 1.5-2 foot dovetail and the short gate? This will just be for hauling typical stuff -- mower, ATV, etc. TIA.

Paid $1,300 for a 6x12 Texas Bragg with dovetail and short ramp. Very well built trailer.

Any drawbacks to a dovetail on a trailer this size? I've never used a trailer with the DT, but it seems to be a useful feature.

The rear will drag if crossing a shallow ditch or something similar. But, it's worth it to me because it loads and pulls so much better than standard with tall ramp. Plus the Texas Bragg has beefed up wiring harness and other little details that make a big difference in the long run.

I have a trailer I got from Got Gear in Ridgleland. I can't remember the brand right now. It is a single axle with the round pipe railing, bi-fold tailgate and I believe a 3,000 lb. axle, could be 3,500 lb. axle but think 3,000 lb. Love the trailer. Bi-fold tailgate work great, no air drag going down the highway. Axle is heavy duty enough for a Side by side, which a lot of the cheaper trailer's are not. Trailer was worth the expense.

Thanks, gents. So no complaints with the bi-fold gate, Scott? One like that may be easier to locate than a dovetail.

Tim if you are going to buy in Vicksburg talk with Steve Sullivan. He is located at the corner of Halls Ferry and Fisher Ferry Road. I bought my 6x14 from him a couple years ago for $1200. Great Christian guy also. My trailer has a standard gate which is helpful if you move furniture.

I have had no problems at all with the bi-fold gate. I would buy another one. I think a heavier built trailer is worth the extra money.

I bought one from him about 5 years ago and while they are definitely cheap, you get what you pay for. Angle iron frame, used tires, just not a heavy duty trailer.
