20 gauge Auto reviews and advice

Give me some feedback. I am looking to purchase a 20 gauge compact of some type. This gun will have to be a do it all. My girl will duck/turkey/squirrel/armidillo etc. hunt with it as well as my son once he gets big enough. I am small enough that I will use it also (mainly waterfowl in timber). I have held a Remington 11-87 and I liked the feel. I will take my daughter to some local stores and let her feel everything we can get our hands on. I am trying to find some post but there aren't a lot of chatter on the net about 20 gauge automatics for some reason.

Good luck they are hard to come by. Just not much demand for them so a lot are not produced.

Peewee i bought my 8yo a Weatherby 20ga Auto two years ago from Cwink. I think it was around $500. He loves it and it is really comfortable for him to handle. You are welcome to borrow it and run some through it to see if you like it, as long as i have it back by turkey season because it is my go to killa.

I have the Remington 1100 and a Tristar that shoot about the same, smooth shooter especially for small children on into adulthood. I have had my Rem since 1972 and bought it used at the time. Telling my age now...

I like the 1187 compact for the kid's, its been good to us so far. We also have a mossberg 500 pump in the youth model that came with the regular barrel and a slug barrel thats been a good one. The slug barrel with certain remington slugs is mean, i killed 2 deer this year with and the kids have killed 3.

They don't make a "kids model" but I bought the Stoeger M2000 last year to squirrel hunt with and love it for any hunting. I'm sure I have cycled close to a thousand rounds through it now and no matter the load it's never hung up. And for $500 you can't beat the price.

I grew up on an 1100 LT and still have it. I acquired an 11-87 youth model for my son (he's 3, so it'll be a bit before using it) but I realized it's as heavy as my full size 1100 LT (which has a 28" barrel). This is good and bad. The recoil will be a little less with the weight, but when he first starts out, I imagine the extra weight will be a make for a bit of a challenge for handling it. Hands down the nicest youth auto I've handled is the Beretta 390 youth. VERY light, and very little recoil. I don't believe they are made anymore, but don't hold me to that. They also go for almost twice the money of the 11-87, so you do pay for what you get.

I've got a Franchi 20 gauge automatic that I really love. I bought it for my wife to shoot a little, but I find myself doing most of my dove hunting and a good bit of duck hunting with it as well.

I second the Weatherby SA-08 20 ga. Bought it in the youth model for my wife and caught myself grabbing it to dove hunt all this year. Been a great gun.

Is the Franchi you have the affinity model. I believe my daughter and I may make some gun shop rounds this weekend to let her feel them. After reading more reviews about the 11-87 folks says it is heavy. Didn't seem heavy to me but I am an adult vs. a youth. I plan to just buy really nice 20 gauge auto and keep it myself after the kids are gone. Compact model guns will actually fit me well too since I am vertically challenged. I am going to definatly check out that Weatherby SA-08 also.
