Guys, my Lab pup is 9 months old. I've read some reviews on line but wanted to get some real world opinions.

1. Which flea/tick control do you recommend?
2. Is heartworm prevention necessary?

I use Trifexis for both heartworm and flea prevention. One pill a month, and I don't have to worry about the ointment not soaking into the skin. It doesn't take care of ticks, but I really don't have a big tick problem either.

1. Probably not right, but I use flea and tick meds on as needed basis. Rarely need them in the winter months, or depending on the region of country my girl is in.

2. Absolutely, especially for a hunting dog and all the nasty stuff they are exposed to. Best scenario is that it works and the dog doesnt get heartworms. In the event they do get HW and the meds have been adminstered properly and you can show it then most companies will cover the cost of the treatment, etc. Again, that varies greatly from vet to vet and company to company, but its like a small insurance policy.

There is a heartworm shot that lasts 6 months that some of the vets have now. It keeps me from possibly forgetting a month. If you are in the jackson area briarwood animal clinic has it, I'm sure many others do to but some don't. I think it's called proheart 6 or something like that.
