Dog food scams

So, ask me again why I have openly scoffed at the on-line "dog food advice" websites for years.....they always assume that the dog food that 99% of us feed or lying about their ingredients, and they always assume that blue Buffalo and the other "super premium" dog food makers have been telling the truth. Oops.

" -- Blue Buffalo agreed on Thursday to pay $32 million to settle mutlidistrict litigation in Missouri filed by consumers accusing the pet food maker of lying about the ingredients in its kibble..."

I went through all the grain free to try to find one where my dog wouldn't scratch out all his fur on his belly. Taste of the Wild is the one he can do. $42 for a bag off Amazon, and he goes through a bag a month. If you can't afford $42 a month, you cant afford a dog. Beats the Walmart stuff where he had the mange.

Are you saying that Walmart dog food gave your dog the mange?

Multiple vet buddies recommend Science Diet. One of them says if not Science Diet, then regular old Purina One is fine. All of the organic stuff is as BS to dog food as it is to human food.

I did the BB thing about 4 years ago for a few months. My lab kept an ear infection and meds would only make it better while he was on it. We switched to BB as a test for the vet and his ears cleared up. It may have been coincidence but it cleared up. Now we went back to Pro Plan after that and he hasnt had an issue yet so may not have been the grain allergy after all.

Science Diet is barely any better than regular junk dog food like basic Purina. It has marketed itself extremely well and vets put it in their practices because Hills hires vets out of school to be health food consultants. This is why a huge number of vet nutrition instructors were past Hills or Purina employees. It's not some crazy conspiracy theory, it's just what has been ingrained into vets throughout their education. It's ok dog food. It's certainly better than Ole' Yeller dog food or whatever cheap crap they sell at Walmart. However, I love my dogs more than most people, so I feel they deserve better. I researched all the premium dog foods and found Fromm's had a great reputation so I buy them $50 a bag (30-ish lbs) Fromm's Gold grain free food. It's almost twice as expensive as basic dog food (maybe 1/3 more than Science Diet), but as sab316 said, it's not like it's going to break your bank account. So it costs you $20 more than crappy food for your dog a month. I have never bought Blue Buffalo because I've used Fromm's since I've had my dogs, but I feel the sure fire way to eliminate crappy dog food, is to not buy it from a big box store.

I feed a rice and fish food from sportsmix. Its about 36 bucks a 40 and cleared up all the ear and skin problems in my dogs.

I've been feeding the Tractor Supply brand (4 Health) the last few years and it's been good. If my dog gets food with corn in it he'll lick his feet till they nearly mold. The 4 Health doesn't have grains in it like Purina. I fed Nutro for a while but after back-to-back recalls I gave up on that.

You may be right, I've done the BB experiment with mine as well as some other brands. Never tried Fromm's, mainly because I wouldn't know where to get it shy of ordering it.

However, one particular vet buddy I mentioned (big hunter, btw, not some fru-fru dog animal activist) was in the 1st graduating class from Miss State vet school and has been practicing for nearly 35 years, so I doubt Hill's was around then and I guarantee it wasn't ingrained throughout his education given his age. He feeds Science Diet to his numerous dogs and recommended it to me, so I don't see any reason not to believe him.

Regardless, I agree, to an extent, I just don't find it necessary to go completely out of my way for dog food. I'm not gonna give him Old Yeller or Kibbles N Bits or any junk like that. I'd equate that to me eating Roman noodles every meal.

It was an expression. No, walmart food didn't literally give my dog the mange....

I don't really care about if it says grain free or organic, I just found one that works. Not going to feed him Walmart crap, I can afford a $40 bag of a food a month. He's my bud and I'll give him whatever he needs to be happy.

I caught mine eating cat crap out of the litter box the other day, and his bowl was full of food. Does anybody know of a good brand dog food in "Cat Crap" flavor?

My English bulldog ate about half my kids hungry hungry hippo balls that go with the game. My yard is now littered with little red an white pieces from said balls. He also ate a wash cloth and various other items left on the floor.

I feed all 3 of my dogs fromm being that 1 of my wiemers is allergic to chicken and it is one of the few that I found that has a chicken free food been happy so far it's a little pricey for 3 dogs but well worth it to me plus I get a free bag for every 12 bags I buy from Hollywood feed
