Nearly every year around this time, I'm reminded about the armistice day blizzard in 1940.
Thought some of you new waterfowlers might like to know about this infamous storm if you haven't heard about it before, and for those of us who have, you might like to take a stroll through yesteryear....

I recall reading that years ago.............like the guy said-we arent nearly hardy stock as those people back then...
I also remember another story from back in the 70's when a bad weather event caught many off guard and many duck hunters died on the Mississippi. It was one of those drastic temp changes with high wind. Leave the ramp with a long sleeve shirt and within a few hours got a 40 degree temp change with howling winds.
I remember a guy in college (MSU) who got caught out on the river around Natchez with his father , brother, and others. I recall they lost a few in their party.
Any river can get you...quick.

I have read a lot about it. Terrible storm, and one that would never happen today because it would be reported days in advance.

With all due respect, Katrina was reported weeks in advance and we all saw how that worked out....

Your point is well taken. I don't think you can categorize a bad winter storm as being in the same league as a hurricane. The consequences are far more tragic in the hurricane scenario. With the flooding it is just more devastating and the effects linger. But I was just trying to point out that 49 duck hunters died of exposure in the Armistice Day storm because of lack of reporting.
Here is a link to an NPR radio story about the event. I always find it interesting--the awe in the voices of the old timers always is shocking to hear
