I've theorized that falling daylight may trigger migration in some waterfowl.

I read many, many years ago that shorter daylight hours prompt many to migrate.

Driving through Arkansas I've seen ducks pretty much anywhere there is water, which is to say, not too many places.

Re: Anyone Seeing Any Ducks Yet?
Started showing up in pretty good numbers last week, I am with yall on the shorter daylight migration theory. Not many mallards but lots of teal, woodducks and gadwall on us right now.
Heres to Long Legged Women, Banded Greenheads, and Long Spurs!!!
Re: Anyone Seeing Any Ducks Yet?
Many species of ducks -- gadwall, teal, shovelers, ect. -- migrate primarily based on photoperiod (length of daylight). The may wait until a North wind to help make it easier, though.
Other ducks, mallards primarily, will stay until it is more economical (calorically speaking) to migrate rather than stay put and try to find open water and food.

And yes, if you have water in Arkansas you have ducks. I friend of mine just sent a video of easily 5K ducks in 3 adjacent rice fields.
