The man who killed them and showed me the picture only had one arm. He said he was WADING OUT INTO THE BEAVER POND to get the first one when the 2nd one came off the beaver lodge straight at him. He killed them in late spring/early summer.

I know from personal experience that, when looking for arrowheads, a cottonmouth of that size will let you get right on top of her and won't bite you. I also know that cottonmouths of that size (I have seen 2 that were bigger than these in my arrowhead hunting grounds) will blow up and literally make a low growling noise. I like to think they were doing it with their scales and not their...errr...growler? However in late spring, when she finds her a nest to lay eggs in, she becomes very territorial. If my black lab Angus were not dead, he could attest to the fact that this is the one time of the year when large cottonmouths will not only hold their ground, but they will become aggressive. Any other time of the year they are very docile. And thank God for that, because I would only have 1 leg, or none, if that weren't the case.

Maybe docile was the wrong word...

try picking up a crawfish trap and having one that size up in it. ohh lawwd talk about slanging a trap. I'll try to find a pick of a good size one i got last crawfish season
