Bought my wife a Camry hybrid. She has been happy with it and it gets about 38mpg on average.

I've been commuting like that for 10 years. I can't stand riding in a car......but it's the best gas mileage option. If you don't mind a car.....go that route. SUV's don't get near the mpg that any of the cars get. On another note, make sure you get something that won't take a huge hit on mileage resale wise. Cars like Camry, Maxima, etc. won't matter all that much. SUV's take a huge hit unless you go with something like Toyota like a 4runner. You'll see them online with 125K-150K and not have a huge drop-off price wise. Look at any Ford or GM vehicle with the same mileage and they take a giant hit.

I'm doing 75 miles one way 5 days a week, so i feel your pain. On a side note, I've got a 05 Altima that I'm trying to get rid of. It has a few quirks to it, and 250k miles on it, but i drove it in today.

I do 55 miles one way 5 times a week. Currently have an 07 Kia Optima. Probably will be replacing it soon. Not sure what I am going to go with but it will definelty be another car even though I hate driving a car every day. Just not any SUVs that get 30mpg.

When my wife graduated from Nursing School, we bought a Honda Civic. Real world gets around 33 mpg. Very comfortable ride, and not nearly as tiny as they once were. It has been one of the best purchases we've made.

7on and 7off 150 mile roundtrip. Buy a nice used 4cyl. keep it maintained and drive it till the wheels fall off. Drove an accord and got rid of it in good shape with 370K on it. Driving a camry now with about 275K on it and would go to California in it if I had to. They both get about 32mpg.

You can probably get one pretty cheap now days too. I heard that they are not going to re-certify them in California anymore.

I commute 76 miles, for the last 3 years it has been in a ford focus zx3, 5 speed. It gets thirty six miles a gallon and i drive the hell out of it. It was cheap to buy and is super cheap to work on. It has been to Canada and back, always been dependable.

I've got my choices narrowed to a 2013 Hyundai Elantra , a 2013 Ford Escape (supposed to only get 5 mpg less on interstate) and a gmc terrain

I would try and pick up a VW Jetta TDI from an individual. Stay far away from the dealership unless you want the latest and greatest emission fix they are gonna come up with.
