There have been a few over the years in Madison and Ridgeland, such as Mean Mallard, Indian Archery, etc..., but nothing that has been able to sustain the big box invasion.
Re: Madison hunting stores
Mean Mallard crashed for other reasons but we wont go into all that

Not really a 'hunting' store but circle 7 on 463 next to beagle bagel has Filson and other things like that. Probably your best bet for browsing.

Then came Big Buck Sports. I wonder what happened to them? Anyone know if they still have the Hattiesburg store?
But back to the original post, you are SOL in terms of a hunting store in Mad town.

Big Buck in Hattiesburg has been closed for a while.
Re: Madison hunting stores
I remember hitting the "close out" at Big Buck in Hattiesburg years ago. They gone. Speed made a mint with the old Mean Mallard, but the focus changed after the first sale.
So many ducks, so little time....

It might not matter to most, but there is a good chance that if you go to Van's you will get to barter with the owner of the place. That fact alone has made a tremendous difference in his business vs others. He has done very well without having a big building and lot investment in a high traffic area!

Very true. I remember when he just had a few jackets and cook books in the smokehouse across the street. Then I remember the current store being about 500 sqft. Everything you used to by smelled like smoked sausage casings. He's done well for himself.

Re: Madison hunting stores
I always figured in order to have a sporting good store you had to be a pecker head and not speak to people.
Vans can be that way sometimes - but several times I have been in there and the owner him self help me.
Vans has the best selection and very good knowledge about the product they sell.

I worked for Jeff when he first opened during summers and holidays (high school days). One day I'll never forget....rigging 80 dozen decoys with crimps, bagging them and putting them in a UHaul truck for a customer. He came in and bought them for his camp and wanted to pay someone to rig them. I started after close of the store and was there until about 4am.
