Looking for a new grill

Postby Law Duck » Fri May 29, 2015 9:32 am

I am in the market for a new grill. I have always just used a cheap charcoal grill in the past, but was thinking about stepping up and buying a little nicer grill this time. I have considered getting a Green Egg and also one of the pellet grills (Traeger or something similar). I have never actually seen anyone cook on one of the pellet type grills but know a couple of people that have them and seem to like them pretty well. I've eaten food off of an egg on several occasions and was happy with the way it cooked. Any input, good or bad, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ceramic grills are nice, I might get one someday. But a Weber is not some "cheap grill". Sure, it doesn't meet the requirement of costing over $600. That does seem to make food taste better I reckon  .

My next upgrade will be to the 26 inch Weber kettle grill. I've had a 22.5" for years. That is a hoss of a grill, and you can't even get a ceramic grill with that diameter, I don't think (could be wrong).

Now when you talk custom welded stuff, that's where you get into the next level of surface area availability. But heat distribution is not as good as the dome design.

That's what I cook on and it does great. Very precise heat control, to the point where I can get 2-3 cookings on the same charcoal.

I'd get a kamado. I cook a lot. I don't just grill steaks and burgers, I cook alot of stuff. plus the kamado is not just a grill.

I have cooked briskets for 21 hours and never cracked the lid.

I can also get it up to 1000 degrees - you can't do either of those on a weber grill.

My 2 cents. I like webers! But the last two grills I've acquired were custom made. Found a welder with an interest in grills, wanting to make some cash and shared ideas drinking cold beer. Spent $425 the first time, $500 the second. Both could withstand a sledge hammer, hold heat and should out live me. Don't know which is more fun, designing the grill, or cooking on it.

I have the Bayou Classic Cypress now and it's been a good one... Quality checks on the new ones have gone down hill though and if/when i have to buy another one it'll be a green egg.

The green eggs seal up tighter from the factory with less work.

I bought one of these at the end of the summer 2 years ago.

Got it on clearance for $150 at Tractor Supply. I couldn't be happier with it. Not a ceramic grill. It's made of two layers of steel with a layer of insulation in between. You can get it up to 700 degrees and put your hand on the lid and not get burned. Smoke with it, grill with it, even pizza. My only regret is that I didn't buy two.

Gonna have to see some pics of these 2 grills!

I just seared two large ribeyes on my fast eddies pellet smoker. It only took 10 - 15 minutes to get the grill to 550 degrees and that's when the magic begam.

Its the wife and my anniversary today and she said she wanted my to grill instead of going out. And for us, that's saying a lot about the grilll.

I also have a larger, two pot, traeger pellet smoker that I like to smoker pork items on. Both pellet grills I have require a bit of a learner curve

Don't have a green egg but I know first hand that it up to the challenge.

Get a weber kettle. I have the performer which is the 22.5 inch kettle on a cart, my next will be the 26". Gets plenty hot enough to sear steaks but can also easily control heat to slow cook stuff.

I have a BGE. I'm still learning but I like it thus far. Cooked one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten on it.

I use a weber kettle for grilling and a weber smokey mountain for slow cooking. Every Thanksgiving i smoke 2 turkeys and two butts on it for 18 hrs and never crack the lid. I have about $280 in the two cookers. Theres no doubt that green eggs are excellent cookers as well.
