Army worms

We just had one of our duck holes wiped out by army worms. Is there anything you can spray the keep them out before hand? Or do you have to wait and spray once the worms are on the plants? Thanks. They ate about 5 acres of jap millet.

Asana XL, Reveal, and Mustang Maxx will stroke them at low rates per acre.

Seven works just as well and is cheaper

Seven is cheaper per gallon and effective, but the rates are much higher per acre. 32oz vs 3-8oz per acre so I guess it depends on how much you plan to spray really.

I've sprayed some the last 2 weeks or so with Intrepid 2F and as far as I can tell it wiped them out. It was $240/gallon but it only took 4 oz/ac. Sevin was $120/2.5 gal but like Tedl10 said the rate was higher and per acre cost was higher.

I found worms in my millet yesterday as it started to rain. I hope it dries enough to spray them this evening.

For what its worth. Its been a bad year for worms. Hit em hard when you can and stay on top of em.

I sprayed Asana XL a week after planting. I'll be spraying it again heavy along with water soluable 45-0-0 urea right after work.

We hadn't been able to plant when we normally do due to the wet summer but were able to get parts of 2 holes planted about a month ago, got a pretty weak stand in three area that were planted, found a few worms in one spot, so tried to spray, got two of the 3 areas sprayed but couldn't put a tractor in one area because it was too wet but did spray to other areas of millet, those suckers ate about 2 acres to the ground in a week where we weren't able to spray, those jokers are bad, everything is now replanted, but we going to have to watch it and stay on top of those jokers till we get some cooler weather

Them jokers were eating the stalks in half up this way earlier this summer!

that was the rice variety of army worms. according to the entomology guys they haven't seen this behavior from them before..they've been here, just never jumped from treated grasses (round-up) to eating stalks of beans, etc.

the time i'm talking about was back when they marched across the Delta back in mid-late 80's.

Man, those suckers got on the new millet we replanted. Thankfully we caught them and got it sprayed. Guys keep an eye on your plots they are bad this year. Our place in near charleston.

I had mine wiped out when it was only 8" tall. Replanted and have been spraying weekly. I have been using a product that I by at tractor supply. It's working pretty well. Just stay on it regularly.
