I know that the May Pond Counts are usually not released to the media until early July but was wondering if anyone on here has any inside info on whether the duck population remains high enough to continue a 60 day framework?

I can't remember where I saw it at but I read a few short reports, and I am about 99% sure it will be 60 n 6. It's wet, and lots of the potholes are full. Reports of a good - normal year on the breeding grounds, which should produce a 60 - 6 numbers.

My guess is same as last many years...."Record numbers and hatchs". Ducks Unlimited relases article in magazine to get everyone fired up close to middle-end of summer, then releases "Must have gear for upcoming season", sporting goods magazines featuring must haves, season comes around and is spotty and lackluster at best. We beotch and complain, for a whole off season. Next July repeat "record hatch and duck numbers expected", 60 and 6.....

That is exactly right!!!
Why in the hail would they tell you otherwise??? EX. "This year is awful. Pot holes are dry, no to very few mallards, very few gadwalls. Expect a season of bench warming, with an early breakfast, and home by 9. DU will be asking for a membership drives with increasing membership dues. Du will strive to build new refuges, which will increase wintering waterfowl feeding areas. At Du we do not want the duck to starve."

My good friend is the head provincial waterfowl biologist in Manitoba. He's swamped (forgive the pun) doing pond counts up there now. He was delayed 1 week due to snow in late May. I'll shoot him an email and see how things are shaping up in the pothole region.

Yep, 90 and 9 --- that is what I am hearing.
Starting in Feb 2015, I will be offering a "divorce special" to any DuckSouther who overdid the 90 and 9 thing --- divorces at 1/2 price plus a free toaster to get you started in your new efficiency apartment bachelor pad, as well as counseling and consoling over a Winchester (shot of Jim Beam with a Pabst Blue Ribbon chaser). What a bargain!
