I have been invited to go to Arkansas on a hunt this weekend and I need some info on what kind of shells I should shoot. I figured that since I wasn't paying for the hunt that I might as well break down and buy some good shells. I shoot a rem. 11-87 sp with the chokes that it comes with. I apologize for my ignorance, but I haven't been duck hunting all that long, and it never hurts to ask. Thanks for the info... Hello Thrasher.
Although I'm not a Remmington fan, (Winchester 1300) I have hunted in AR. and its great I think this weekend and next week according to the weather reports a whole lot is going to change in the next week or so for us in the south. Anyway back to your question. It will depend where you hunt timber or fields. If in the timber modified, improved cyl. or open bore should do nicely with a 3 inch mag. no. 2,3, or 4 shot of your choice!!! ( I like the Dryloc myself). If hunting in fields I would shoot a full choke with 3's or 3 1/2 inch, no. 2 shot that way you might get a shot at some passing geese and have the juice too take them too. Although if you do shoot this heavy aload, 3 1/2 in the rice fields you might want to shoot ducks comming in or going out,or passing. It WILL tear a duck up @ close range. This is of course my opinon. I wish you all luck on your trip. Any high quality 1 1/4 oz load of steel #3's should do nicely.

If your hunting the flooded timber and will be mostly shooting decoying birds, Kent TM in #5 shot is hard to beat.

Read your owners manual carefully. I'm pretty sure it will tell you NOT to shoot steel shot through your factory full choke. I use a Comp-N-Choke improved cylinder most of the time but if the shots are more than about 35 yards, I would probably go with the modified for most shells. I stick with my improved cylinder for about everything when I can afford Hevi-shot however. Pattern your gun by target shooting various distances, as every gun patterns differently with different shot and chokes. Good luck and most of all don't forget to HAVE FUN!

I will try to make it simple for you. The only chokes you need are modified for field and improved cylinder for tight timber. With steel, velocity is very improtant. Estate, Federal and Winchester are all good shells, but not the xperts from winchester and you really don't need the Premium ones, since they add price. The Bismuth, Matrix and other is overkill and very expensive. If you are going to be shooting mallards, I would reccommend #2's. some folks swear by #3's or 4's, but I also find that these guys knock down birds but don't kill them stone cold dead. The #2's seem to do that. If you have a good retriever, that's not a problem. Also, Kent is another lower cost alternative that the guys I hutn with are very fond of, I myself shoot estate. But you can't go wrond with winchester. If you are planning on going to mack's in stuttgart, that is the place to get them. I would stay away from remington. here is some web pages so you can look for yourself.
