Anybody get stuck in the storm? Iv never been stuck in a snow storm but I been reading up on some of these stories about being stuck on the interstate for 10-12-14 hours in Alabama and Georgia and I got to scratching my head.. if you have 4 wheel drive would you not just hit the median or shoulder and go ahead to where you were going or atleast to the nearest exit? I would guess the stories you are hearing about sitting there so long are the ones that dont have 4 wheel drive? I just cant imagine sitting on a insterstate in stand still traffic for over an hour much less 10 or 12.

most of my wife's team were stranded for hours. the ones that couldn't move, abandonded their cars and either walked a few/many miles home, or slept at a church or community center. 4wheelers/utv's were deployed to rescue friends' and wives, as well as parking 4x4 as close as they could get to still get out of the gridlock then out to hike in to school to get kids and hike back out to 4x4.... most of these are people from b'ham and immediate surrounding 'burbs and couldn't make it back into b'ham. even al roker is criticizing gov of al and mayor of b'ham for lack of preparedness and trying to say the weatherman got it wrong...al says "oh no you di'in't...ample warnings were given about the impending storm!"

Is that a polite way to say the shoulder isn't a option?

no reference to shoulder use...just relaying issues encountered in storm from people in 2wd vehicles.
i'm sure the shoulder was used a good bit, but from what they ^^ were saying, there were so many abandoned vehicles on the shoulders & median that it would be near impossible to get through no matter how many tires were pulling. one of her guys is a hunter and he said there is so much ice and no way to deal with it that it's hard to keep from slipping into the ditch in places...no salt/sand trucks, no road plows, etc...even after they vowed that they'd never get caught w/their pants down, again, after the last storm 5(?)-10(?) years ago.

Not necessarily......Just having 4WD is no assurance you will avoid getting 'stuck' in a Winter storm event unless you have studs or chains.......and a winch.

There ARE certain road conditions during a rain/ice/freeze-up/snow event that 4WD's are also debilitated. 'Have seen it in SK and the Dakotas on a couple of our trips. Not a warm and fuzzy feeling. :|

I told my wife on Monday night when they were forecasting all of this, that there was probably some guy in a hotel room in Jackson here on business from Michigan that was watching the local news and laughing at everyone freaking out over a little snow. Just a daily thing to them.

What some people do t undersrand, there may have only been a "little snow" but the majority of it stuck on the roadways. Before the snow came sleet, which froze to the road. I can assure you, after driving to andfrom McComb for 8 hours yesterday, the roads are no joke. I dont care where you're from. I saw several northern tags on cars in the ditches.

Agreed!!!.... Yea you may be from up north, but guess what they have the equipment to handle it due to snow being a common occurrence. Down here it would be pointless to have that type equipment for a storm that comes, what, every 5-10 years.

Once a road gets frozen, all the bets are off. Whether that because it's sleet, compacted snow that turns to ice, black ice, or whatever, no amount of power to all the wheels creates extra friction. Four times zero is still zero. Ding dongs that think their 4WD will keep them between the ditches are usually the first to get sideways, and thus, create problems. Them and tractor trailers convinced their driving wizardry exempts them from the laws of physics.

Why roads weren't treated and schools and offices weren't closed is a mystery.

Funny how the media pokes fun of the South during these winter storms that shut us down, but you don't see them laughing when it is 95 F in Chicago and they are declaring a state of emergency...
