Need Help

Postby eastwoods » Wed Jul 07, 2004 8:05 pm

Got a pit blind with 22 X 37 dog box on one end.

Thinking of doing one of two things or both.

1. Teach the dog the command "down" to lay down.

2. Building a roof like thing that is smaller at top than bottom where she can jump out of either side. The top would be the same width as the push down panels. The dog would stick head out only and would be short enough to not stand on all four. Dog would probably be able to sit, but not stand.

Help please!!!! Need some opinions!!!! Like on material wood or metal, how to secure it, etc.

why not just get a portapet box, and dig out the ground a little to lower the height..... if that's what you're after?

down is a command that is easily taught and probably should be taught anyway. It sure won't hurt anything.

dog box

Josh, are you talking about half a kennel and then just lay fast grass over the top? Before I've just put my dogs down in the pit with me and had every retrieve be a blind- maybe thats why they don't mark so well.Seems like every time you try to fool with getting the dog back in the pit/box thats when the ducks show up and you're busted

down

Postby dukdawgn » Sat Jul 10, 2004 1:19 pm

john, no dog out there is gonna stay in the down position when 40 mallards are circling 6 times before they are close enuff, especially once the shooting starts.

sounds like EW is looking to rig something to where, even if the dog stands up, its not up in the way, or not sticking out like a sore thumb.

B3, well, it doesn't have to be half a box, it can be a whole box, six or eight inches of ground dug out, the box sitting in that hole, and cover with corn/fast grass/cane/whatever.....

Hey guys im a new trainer in memphis, but i see your problem try this have your dog kennel, measure height, width.Once you have done that build three very loose hinged panels that taper in at the top. Then you can camo to where the dog can see out, shoot ducks dog bumps panel it open then he does his/her job. Try this

I kind of like the hog panel idea just like what is on the rest of the pit covering the hunters. I'll just make a big enough hole on each side the dog can stick his head out. They will touch at the top so the dog will hopefully like to lie down on fresh rice straw to get the head out.

I got a pit box at each end of my pit... the west side pit box is under the pit top, which is good for eh, little dogs that just can't be still... its alos got a place to tie them in just in case. The east end of the pit is rowdys dog box, and I just put a wad of grass & straw bundled up with ties on the outside of it, with just a little coming over into his box. The hole when he is out looks worst than we he is in it, a quiet dog in a pit like that does not spook birds unless he jumps around, simply moving to watch birds is fine. For the coffin blinds, we got a little coffin box for dogs, that stakes out. A couple peices of conduit with some fast grass zip tied to it makes a dandy dog blind, espeically if you put the dog off the side of you (instead right beside, or behind you) so the ducks arent looking directly into his blind when they come in. I use a box to teach handling, and steadying, so a dog sitting in a box is like being in the front yard... travis

Pit was installed in levee today. Put in 100 gallons of water to keep it in the ground. Put out herbicide and 350 pounds of fertilizer/acre today. Started the well at 5:00 PM. Will plant some rice seed on the disturbed ground around the pit tomorrow. This is the latest rice crop planted in the entire state of Arkansas I think, but I bet da' ducks aint gonna' mind one bit.

Look @dim' birds!!!!
