What are you using it for? For deer I would reccomend a 257 weatherby or perhaps the 260 Remington.

By you are probably wanting something more for long range if looking for a custom rifle so then you will probably want a magnum round. If you want a sure enough big game gun go with the 300 win mag or weatherby mag or my favorite the 338 lapua.

The answer to your question would be much better with more info. As stated above most people wanting a custom rifle mean a long range rifle.

However what do you want in the rifle? Will you reload yourself or shoot factory? Do you want bolt action or semi auto? What is your price range? Magnum round or short mag? What are you looking to achieve? Sub MOA groups at 1000 yards? Greater damage to target downrange? Speed of the second shot?

There are literally hundreds of people making great rifles right now, to just pick one as the best would be difficult.

However my top 3 would likely be if forced to choose:

1. Tac Ops
2. APA
3. GAP

Most of the guns above carry a $5k or more price tag without glass. There is some pretty good knowledge on here about long range shooting with a little more info from you. Another option would be to look around at snipers hide, long range hunting, and sniper central for more detailed info. Hope that helps. Blackduck from what I have seen may be the best to talk with about the subject on here.

I've got one from GAP. or Gnat Ass Precision. 50% of the coolness is to say you have a gun from GAP. all the others mentioned are good as well. Long range rifles is another good place. In Brandon is DIXIE Precision Rifles that does a good job. They make suppressors as well. Cheapest route is to upgrade an existing gun

700 ADL from Academy for 379, get a good bedded stock add in a DBM kit and maybe do a barrel swap to a good quality barrel. From there you can true it up, trigger upgrades etc...

It would be for deer. I'm not wanting it for long range shooting. I want a very accurate custom hunting rifle. Bolt action 308 or 270 shoot a 270 short mag now.

Major parts to a 308 gun you are getting:
Barrel
Action
Stock
Bottom metal (blind mag or detachable magazine)
trigger

See what you like with each one and call a few companies to see who can assemble it the best and cheapest. There are lots of good barrels out there (Bartlein, Krieger, Brux, Broughton ect.) You will probably need one in a medium contour (roughly 3 lbs and 24" long). Remington actions are good but Defiance and Stiller and Surgeon are really impressive. I like Mcmillian stocks - especially their new A3 Sporter or the HTG with the adjustable cheek piece. Many scopes have large bells like 50-54mm and that causes the scope to sit really high on the action. The adj cheek pieces give you a really nice cheek weld.

Get a jewell trigger and what ever bottom metal you want. Badger makes the most bottom metal I believe.

Then a full custom would be a colossal waste of money IMO. Just get a donor and restock it with a custom McMillan stock of your choosing. You'll have a rifle no one else has and save thousands. Replace trigger and maybe barrel to take it a notch further.

With that said, I respect a fella spending his money however makes him happy.

If you are looking into a .308, a few ideas as I went this route about 5 years ago.....

1. That is by far the most popular long range gun over the past say 30+ years, however it's currently not the "hot" item in long range shooting. There are TONS of .308 rifles for sale on many of the forums I listed above. I would get a used one of your choice for likely less than 3K and then figure out what you like and don't like from there.

2. With a .308 I love the round, it's a great round, however I almost got rid of mine as post panic getting bullets or reloading parts were next to impossible. It is just too popular of a round if we have another scare. I would consider a different round for that reason only. .260, any of the 6mm rounds, would be more available IMO.

Lastly as expected Blackduck is once again a wealth of info on this topic, +1000 on the Mcmillian Stock, surgeon action, Jewell trigger (timmney is a close second) and I like Krieger barrels although admittedly I haven't tried a ton of them only about 4 different makes.

Remember too, if you buy an old Remmy 700 in 308 ($400), you can have it converted (because it is a short action) to a 300 short magnum and even use the same barrel. There are a number of good barrel options out there under $500. A McMillan stock is going to run you around $550. You can get a "decent" Bell and Carlson stock for around $250. Jewell trigger is the way to go...maybe a Sako extractor.

You can buy a $700 Zeiss 4.5x14.50 Conquest and throw a Keaton Industries custom target turret on the top for $125 and you can dial them in, aim and fire.

Take it to birdsong's and get it Black or Green T'd.

the bolt face for a 308 and 300 WSM are different diameters. If you are going to pull a stock barrel off and rechamber it you should probably go ahead and true the action and get a new barrel.

225 Winchester, 22/250 Remingtion, 6mm Norma BR, 243 Win, 250 Savage, 260 Rem,
6.5/284 Norma, 7/08 Rem, 284 win, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 338 Federal, 35 Rem, and

As stated above, a custom rifle is many things to many people but for me, it's a John Bolliger.
