My opinion of Johnny Manziel

Postby camlock » Wed Aug 28, 2013 1:44 pm

take it or leave it...but I listen to sports talk 8+ hours a day...Manziel obviously often discussed...my thoughts as I rarely hear anybody share these feelings and when they do it's only brushing up against how I feel...not totally how I feel and maybe I'm totally 100% wrong, but here goes...

If Johnny Manziel had been a leadership figure for a QB over the offseason and came back ready to go this season, my feelings would still be that he is in for the biggest letdown in college football. several factors...one being is that the way he played he got really lucky that he never got injured and he is just walking a tightrope in this league for that is going to happen, and not just big hits but knees and ankle...you don't run all over the field for 30 minutes a game at these speeds without trouble happening...eventually you are gonna get cleaned or drug down and hurt. another factor...he lost two NFL tackles, I watched Manziel have time in the offense behind that line that should've been a delay of game...how good is he gonna be without two NFL tackles in front of him??? Lastly, SEC defenses have seen him, he is not gonna sneak up on anybody...I will also say, had he been the team leader and worked hard, maybe he offsets and helps his team stay on track...the fact he's had the offseason he has had looks to me like he's destine to show up expecting run around the conference like he did last year with a new offensive line, no Ryan Swope, no Chrisitan Micheal, and target on his back with a season of film in all the opposing coaches offices....

I just don't see it happening! Maybe I'm crazy

Who is to say he hasn't shown up for every workout and every drill and every practice and given 100% this off season. I think he has partied and had fun just like other players. He just gets a lot more attention when he does. The autograph thing aside I feel it is a separate world from what happens when it's football time. I may have missed something but I never read about him having on the practice field or in the weight room problems this off season.

Even if he did...my thought is the same, point is not at all to denounce any of that really... My only point to even bring up anything about his off-season was to say it would appear that spending as much time as he's spent "being a celebrity" would not be very conducive to any extra work with his team and given two big offensive weapons and his two biggest figures on the line gone, maybe some extra attention wouldn't hurt. Maybe he did all those things and it's overlooked, all the other stuff I said is what I have I see as his hurdle as it pertains to how he plays in the SEC this season.

lemme get this straight...the best player in college football last year was a red shirt freshman, with less than a year of seasoning in the SEC competition and the fact that he got kicked out of a quarterback camp and may or may not have received money for autographs has relegated him to the biggest let down of the 2013-2014 college football season? come on, has he really lost the ability to pass the ball or read a defense because the media has come after him?

seems to me that if he did just as much work this off-season as he did last off-season, he should have about the same performance as last year which was pretty dang good. but, if he did extra work at all, shouldn't he be better than last year. all that presupposes that he doesn't blow out a knee or break a collarbone, which is hard to blame on an overzealous sports beat over-sensationalizing everything. is he that much bigger of a target now than he was after the first three or four games last year, and if so, shouldn't the SEC powerhouses have shut him down last year?

Look at the drop in production Tebow had after his first monster year.

Drop of production????? He was a heisman finalist who got a ton of 3rd place votes by jealous non sec voters. Who led a team to its only loss in the sec championship game only to absolutely blow out Cincinnati in a sugar bowl game. He stayed elite no way anybody could say he didn't.

That's not at all what I said...I plainly laid out why I thought he was in for a letdown, I only mentioned his offseason distractions could play into those things as he might need to be better prepared given their losses in the offense around him. I also stated that even if he did and offseason was no factor at all that instill think he's got some hurdles to prevent a letdown from what he did last year and described what I thought pretty detailed. I thought I made all those points pretty clearly, not sure how u got that I said just his offseason sets him up to be a letdown on the field this season?

I might be totally wrong, I just think he's got a Tall task to ride that same wave he was on last year.

As far as his personal statistics his numbers were lower. I am not saying he was not as good or not even a better player just that his stats dropped. When you put up numbers like that it is hard to duplicate. I really don't see Manziel running for 1400 yards again this year. If you go back and look at his games against LSU, Florida, and Bama he was shut down in the second half of the game once they got used to what he was doing.

Manziel is basically Eli Manning while at Ole Miss minus twitter. He is a rich, talented QB that is bedding a lot of women, drinking a lot of alcohol and hanging around celebrities.

Will he duplicate the success he had last year? Unlikely. He threw for 3700 yards and rushed for 1400 yards (led the SEC is rushing - let that sink in for a second). He shattered SEC offense records.

Teams have had an entire off-season to game plan and prepare for him. It will be virtually impossible to be as good.

That said, my prediction is that he has another phenomenal year...3000+ yards passing...close to 1000 yards rushing...approximately 40+ combined TDs. I could also see a scenario in which is injured in a minimal way and shuts it down to protect himself for the NFL draft in the spring.

it is my understanding that he was a redshirt freshman last year. what are the odds that this is his last year in college football?

I think it is safe to say he will be in a NFL camp this time next season. Think his Dad already has harsh feelings towards Texas A&M and has said just that.

Couch couldn't throw it. Manziel can. At this juncture, he will probably project in the first round. He will not be Drew Brees, but he could be a solid NFL QB akin to Russell Wilson in the right system (like the Eagles...who will have a high pick).

Bridgewater will be the first QB off the board. Manziel could easily be the second QB off the board...between him and Boyd from Clemson.
