Scenario:
Daughter’s car is in the body shop being covered under someone else’s insurance.
Rental car is also being covered by said insurance.
Rental car swerves to miss dog that “appeared out of nowhere”, hits mailbox & sustains a considerable amount of damage.
Question:
Will this be covered under my personal insurance or under the renters policy? Didn't take the additional insurance offered when the rental was picked up.

It will be covered under your insurance. They are paying to "replace" your car while yours is in the shop.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Your insurance will cover it. My wife had a wreck in the rental van while her's that was wrecked a week earlier was in the shop. Get ready. Premiums are about to go through the roof whether she was at fault in either or not.

So if one were to hit the animal then incur damage to the rental would it be the pet owners responsibility?

If you can prove liability then it would be the pet owners responsibility, however, that is usually hard to prove. Square up and hit the dog....it'll be cheaper in the long run insurance wise. As my dad used to tell me, a $30k truck goes into a $5 dog, one time with nothing left over.
