I live on the coast and it amazes me that humming birds can fly across the gulf of mexico, or a teal 6-8 weeks old can fly across America, then to mexico.

teal are crazy little birds, we just finished seeing the last of last years young coming back on their reverse migration, yet the next year's little ones will be back very soon. Amazing little birds. I've shot them in south LA in late sept, and flown to northern alberta the next day and shot them their (bluewings in both instances). I've been 100 miles out in the gulf in october in horrible storms and seen the bands winging it for mexico and belize and beyond. BW's really are one of my favorites, but man i wish we had the occasional cinny over here.

Yeah, the earliest teal nests should begin hatching around now. When I worked for Delta several summers ago, I was amazed at what I learned about bluewings. They showed up in North Dakota in very late May or early June, began nesting, and incubated for about 20 days (a week less than a mallard or pintail), hatched starting now throuh early July, and were headed back south in August. They spend almost no time on the nesting grounds.
