Ask DS - Shade Trees

Postby bigoak » Mon May 13, 2013 8:36 am

Need a little more afternoon shade for my dog. Don't want an oak that drops acorns and don't really want a bradford pear. I want to try something different. Something that grows fairly fast and spreads out a little. What kind of good shade trees do you have in your yard?

And drop more limbs and twigs than you'll know what to do with. Try a red maple 'autumn blaze' or bald cypress or Chinese elm.

You can buy sweetgum now that do not produce fruit. Sweetgum has always been a great shade tree except for the dang sweetgum balls. Grows fairly fast, limbs out like you would want a shade tree to do, and has great fall color. Yellow popular or green ash would work well too.

Hell come fall when the leaves drop, but this is the fastest growing shade tree I've seen. Good shape and dense top.

Royal empress aka bluebell is a super fast grower! They have some pretty flowers on them too after they get a few years old.

Yellow "tulip" poplar, fast growing, excellent shade, good solid tree. Many of the above mentioned species will give you nothing but trouble down the road.

What I was gonna say too. A lot of the others are prettier trees, but a tulip poplar is about as fast growing as any I know.

Tulip poplar, while pretty, is a soft wooded tree and can be prone to snapping in high winds.
