Anyone ever been? Have any tips on guides? What to expect thanks DS

I went when I lived there. We left from Haleiwa, but I don't remember the guide. I didn't really like it that much. The doggone Pacific was too rough for me. We did catch a few tuna though.

Funny you mention it. I just found out I have a business conference near Kona in January. Not the peak of blue marlin season, but still some billfish to be had. You can charter a sportfisher for a full day's fishing for around 700. I've been looking for names too. I checked the saltwater sportsman message boards. The locals say there are no secrets to the fishery, you just need maximize your time on the water.

You could probably troll for some T&A. I'm sure there are some trophies around. Try the beaches.

Fishing sucks there. Take a horseback tour or zip line, cheaper and more fun. I went twice both times we trolled (not fished) around the island, the guides were transplants from Florida (where they still had boats) and said they prefered Hawaii due to less work while on the boat and prefered the laid back lifestyle vs Florida. Really dis-appointed with both experiences and wouldnt recommend. Depending on which island your going PM me and can throw a few suggestions your way.

I agree. I fished all the Big Island and the highlight of my trip was I was on a boat with a family from Jackson area. When I arrived the Captain said it was the first time in 15 years he had all MS folks on his boat. He said the fishing has really gone down hill due to the Japaneese putting nets up around the islands. I guess they get out of US waters and surrond the islands as I understood it. The captain of my boat was a transplant from Alaska.

Where are you going to be? I lived out there for a summer just east of Diamondhead and spent a lot of time in Waikiki, Honolulu, and some time up on the North Shore. I actually got on a boat with a charter out of Ala Moana Harbor and worked a handful of charters as a deckhand for him. I only know about Oahu though so if you're going to a different island I won't be much help. Shoot me a PM I can probably get you some more information.

It's been several years, but my one time fishing Hawaii was out of Maui on the Piper with Capt. Jeff. 3 of us fishing with our 3 wives. The boat was really nice and the women enjoyed themselves. Top of the line gear, and Jeff and his deckhand were great. I ended up with a Marlin. Like I said, it's been awhile ago, but I would fish with him again if I get back that way.
