I have wanted a shallow water anchoring system in my boat for a long time but couldn't see spending several hundred dollars for one commercially available. I have been looking at different alternatives and it always seems to come back to the raw material being the most expensive thing. There have been many times I want to anchor the boat without using a traditional anchor.
I found the link below from a guy who was wanting the same thing and didn't want to spend the prices being asked. It tells how he built a low cost DIY anchor system with materials bought from an on line retailer. I just ordered the stuff to make two 8ft. camo anchors and it costs less that $100.00. The same set up from Cabelas was over $500.00. Thought some of y'all might like to see it.

Re: Shallow water anchoring system
i redfish with a guy in the marsh and he has the absolute best anchoring system that i've seen as far as minimal price and effectiveness.
he has about a 6-8 foot piece of fiberglass pole. This pole is about 1 inch in diameter and he has a t connecter pushed on the end of the pipe. the pole and connector look/feel like pvc but it's much stiffer and stronger. he the runs a piece of rope through the t and ties a loop back into his main line.
we will pull up to wherever we fish and he will stick the pole in the mud, then the wind will drift us off the pole and he will take the mainline of the rope and then wrap around a cleat. when it's time to go, he will just start the motor, back up and the pole pulls straight out of the mud. unwraps rope around cleat and lays pole in the bottom of his boat.
if this makes absolutely no sense i'll try and draw a diagram.

Keep one in my bay boat and use it when fishing the marsh. SS is a little stronger in windy conditions, but adds more weight in the boat compared to aluminum.

They are basically spud poles for bigger boats but they are solid fiberglass and a good bit stouter than something like aluminum conduit. They also have a tip on the end so mud doesn't go all up the iside and make a mess in the boat.
Just a note of warning, don't get the fiberglass poles from Grainger. They aren't the same thing as poles used for anchoring and will splinter fiberglass in your hand.

+1 on cajun anchor! However if you are fishing river sand cajun anchor doesn't work too well. You can also use PVC pipe for a REALLY cheap anchor.
Re: Shallow water anchoring system
Wish I'd known about Cajun Anchor, I think I'd like those even better.

Re: Shallow water anchoring system
That's what I ordered and it came today. Got two 8 ft. camo with T tops. I ordered 1 inch stainless steel ring to tie off to the front and back cleat for the pole to go threw and anchor just like shown on their website.
