Spraying weeds

Postby southernvaughan » Tue Mar 12, 2013 3:22 pm

I know it's been said a million times but what can I spray on the yard right now to kill off the emerging weeds? Also, I want some kind of sprayer to go on my fourwheeler. I have the tank and pump with a wand but need some type of boom or boom less broadcast sprayer. What y'all think?

I picked up a boom from trctor supply and used the same pump. I just attached it to the rear rack. I just sprayed round up to kill the weeds. this will enable only bermuda to come up. I do this every year.

Called my dad and he had a 15' broadcast nozzle on his. Will roundup be ok if I'm spraying over mostly st Augustine and some Bermuda? This isn't at my house in the woods it's at my fiances house in a neiborhood in Brandon so I have to be sure on this.

My grandmother's St Augustine was greening up in early February. I sprayed my Bermuda the first week of February with roundup and 2,4-D. Getting late now cause you run the risk of injuring your grass with roundup

3-way product (2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP) for broadleaf weeds or carfentrazone (Quicksilver in turf, Aim in crops) for seedling broadleaf weeds and quinclorac (Drive in turf, Facet in crops) for postemergent crabgrass. Bermuda may slightly discolor for a few days after full rate of Drive but will recover. You can use a 1/2X rate of Drive at 2 apps 3-4 weeks apart to be more gentle on bermuda if you want. Revolver (foramsulfuron) or Dismiss (sulfentrazone) for SMALL goosegrass.

Do not use the 2,4-D + dicamba on the St Augustine. Go to www.msucares.com and click on link to weed control. Then look at their Weed Control Guidelines pdf which will have a turf section in there. It will give you several options for the weeds you are trying to control.

You couldn't pay me to put Facet in my ATV tank.

2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP = Ortho Weed B Gone Sourthern Max available at Lowes

Labeled for use on St. Augustine and certain rates.

24d + dicamba + mecoprop = strike 3, trimec, triplet, etc

the 24d is the active ingredient that kills the st. augustine.

In the "southern" formula that has been mentioned, the 24d is a cut rate as oppose to the regular formula of trimec.

Please correct me where I am incorrect.

Yes it is labeled.....at lower rates. The Ortho Weed B Gone types are reduced acive ingredient (lbs of ai/A) rates for St Augustine. There are a lot of other chemicals out there that can be used for St Augustine for whatever weed problem you may have. I always tell people to look at the weeds first. What are you trying to kill? Do not say everything. Actually find out what the weeds are. Then look for herbicides that control the type of weed you are trying to kill. Then see which of those herbicides are cleared for the type of crop/forage/turf you are growing. Think about what else is in the yard. Are there shrubs/plants/trees that do not need drift from the product you are using (drip line too). There are some great preemergence herbicides one can use on St Augustine that will control a ton of different weeds (usually applied in Fall). Not arguing with anyone, just saying it is best to look at what specific weeds you are trying to control and the path one should go down when figuring out what to spray.

All of the above are correct about not spraying some of the herbicides I mentioned earlier for bermudagrass on St. Augustine. I got on the bermudagrass train after reading Wingman's post and wasn't thinking about St. Augustine. Manor (metsulfuron) is very good for controlling many broadleaf weeds in St. Augustine. Use lower labeled rates to minimize any discoloration though. This is the same active ingredient in Escort XP fyi, just the turf version.

Someone mentioned that you couldn't pay him to put Facet in his spray tank? Why? Did I misinterpret that or what's the problem? Drive (quinclorac) is VERY good for postemergent crabgrass control in bermudagrass and about the only thing you can use for selective crabgrass control POST (legally) since MSMA got booted from residential turf use.

Again, quinclorac for use in BERMUDAGRASS and not in St. Augustinegrass. Just to clarify.
