I've owned a Yamaha, my dad has had 2. I've been around the Harley crowd and while they are too cool for school, they are always in the shop while we've never had a problem with a jap bike. Also, hd accessories are about triple the price of everything else. If you just have to go the Harley route, the street glide is probably the best laid out bike I've ever seen or ridden.

i suggest you visit different dealers and take your time looking over their selection. there are alot of garage queens out there for sell. low milege and cheap. it is a buyers market at this time but with warmer weather it will change soon. might want to attend a few rallies and talk with riders and take in all the fun. just be sure to get what you want the first time and not regret a purchase. then you will be in the hole trading or selling. get a bike and put it in the wind, you will meet a lot of people and have fun doing it.

I agree with the guys who say look around. For an all around motor for cruisin round town and trips every once in a while, I like the Heritage Softail Classic by Harley, and the Yamaha VStar 1300 or 1300 deluxe. The Yamaha is liquid cooled. REALLY look cause one the Yamaha touring bike, the Venture, is still carburated,... and still has a cassette player. If you like the sport bike look the Yamaha FJR is a very nice bike... the 2013 comes standard with real cruise control. If you have never ridden then buy a late model Honda 750 Shadow Aero and learn to ride... around 2500-3000 for one in great shape with low mileage. I personally like the Victory Cross Country Tourer and the Harley Davidson Ultra Classic. Theres no doubt the Victory is a much better bike mechanically, and the Honda Goldwing tops all of them mechanically in my opinion. I know it seems like Im rambling but really be honest with yourself about how you will ride and why you want to ride and choose a bike that best fits those...

If you want to look like everybody else get a Street Glide. If you dont want a HD then buy a used Jap bike because you will be selling it next year to buy a HD.

If just getting into it, I would buy a used Yamaha VStar or Roadstar. Extremely reliable, cheap to maintain, and affordable. They look great too. I bought mine new, and wished I would have bought a low miles used one with all the stuff already installed (windshield, saddlebags, etc...). That way if you do chose in a year or 2 to get a harley, or something bigger, you can basically sell it for what you paid. Depending on if you've ever ridden before, you can start with a 650 or 1100 Vstar if you are brand new to bikes like I was, and pick one up for less than $4k with only a few thousand miles (like this one: http://memphis.craigslist.org/mcy/3647230257.html or this one: http://memphis.craigslist.org/mcy/3634911257.html). Once you are comfortable and want something bigger with more power, just sell it for what you paid give or take $500

My dream bike is a Yamaha Roadstar Warrior.

Just FYI, progressive has the cheapest motorcycle insurance you can buy.
