National Title Capability of State and Ole Miss in Football
What is the realistic capability of State or Ole Miss winning an national title in modern football? Neither has even won an SEC championship since integration. However, in this day and age of SEC Football money from television contracts in which all of the schools have more resources than ever before, does this make it possible that either State or Ole Miss could win a national title? Can they become national powers (akin to Florida, Bama, Ohio State, etc.)? Are both schools precluded from ever achieving such success because they will always have to compete against each other for a relatively small number of recruits?

I don't think it will happen but it is possible. It would have to happen like it did for auburn, catch lightening in a bottle for a year. However, i don't think either will have dynasty potential.

There are a LOT of schools that have not won a national title in football in the modern era after integration. So, to answer your question, I don't think Ole Miss or MSU face any bigger hurdle than most any other school.
To the contrary, I think being in the SEC may actually increase the odds a bit for the following reasons. First, the additional resources that you mentioned. Also, the ability of being able to recruit well outside of MS due to players wanting an opportunity to play in the SEC, and particularly at Ole Miss ( Ole Miss appears to be attracting out of state students ---both regular students and athletes). But perhaps just as important is the following: IF either Ole Miss or MSU were to win an SEC title, then there is a good likilihood that we would be playing in the national title game. Because to win the SEC, Ole Miss or MSU would likely have to go undefeated. And being undefeated and in the SEC would pretty much guarantee a shot at the national title. I am not sure that such would be a true statement if Ole Miss and MSU were in any other conference.
If you have a very good team, with the right schedule, and catch a few breaks here and there, it could be done --- even at Ole Miss and MSU.
As bad as things got at Ole Miss during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the Rebels were only 10 points away from winning 10 games last season (with close losses to Vandy, TAM and LSU). And the flip side is that we were only a point or so away from winning only 5 and not even going to a bowl game (with close win over Arkansas). The point being is that seasons can sometimes dramatically swing one way or the other based upon only a handful of key plays during a season. In order to have a special type of season necessary to propel at school to a shot at a national title, you not only have to be very good, but you have a have a bit of good fortune as well.

WOW, one big recruiting class and #olemiss #webelievenow #unrealisticexpectations
Now, back to the OP. Is it possible? Yes, is it probable, I dont think so for the next year or 3. However, if the SEC hype can continue, just by association, the recruiting classes will continue to get stronger and the chances for each school will increase. Just look at Vandy, decent coach and good pool for recruits has been a great combination.

States chances of winning a national championship

State and the words national championship have no business

Neither State or Ole Miss will ever win a National Title in football as long as there are 3 Division I schools in the state. I stand by this offer and somebody fill free to quote me for posterity: If State or Ole Miss ever win a National Championship in Football in my lifetime, and I still have teeth in my head, I'll eat the boots on my feet.

I would say the only sport we have a chance at is baseball, just because its a much more a game of streaks and we (all schools) can recruit out of state effectively.
Football? Well, I think Bigwater said it best......
I will bet anyone on here $1000 dollars that no MS team will win a national championship in football in the next twenty years. I'll bet $500 that neither wins the west in the next ten. This Forum should still be around then... it has occupied all my spare time since 2001.

I'd agree with baseball being the only sport that State or OM could win a NC but they're still behind most of the SEC in scholarships.hillhunter wrote:I would say the only sport we have a chance at is baseball, just because its a much more a game of streaks and we (all schools) can recruit out of state effectively.

Re: National Title Capability of State and Ole Miss in Footb
I could see them winning one in basketball. State has had the talent before to win one in basketball and as with baseball it is a about being hot at the right time. The only way they will do it in football is for one team to be down a while, so the other can get the best in state recruits and be able to get top notch players from out of state for four years or so. This is assuming they recruit players that fit the system and needs and also have a capable coach. Just not enough in state recruits to go around. If the two were combined then this would be a totally different story.
