SHAQ a star recruiter for LSU?

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Sun Feb 10, 2013 8:51 am

Prior to signing day, I saw the following article from the bleacher report circulating on SEC chat boards :

http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/15 ... he-for-lsu

Quite obviously, the Shaq attack didn't work. Question for LSU fans: Is Shaq often brought in to try to seal the deal with recruits? Why would Shaq's star power be considered greater than the star power of past players from many other schools? And why use a former basketball player instead of a former football player?

This all appeared rather odd to me at the time I read it. Just curious as to what LSU fans think.

Shaq is one of the most well known people on planet earth. He also is a great representative for LSU. There is a wow factor in meeting him.** Makes perfect sense to me in trying to wow the #1 recruit in the nation. It didn't work. RN was apparently also recruited by Mingo, Sam Montgomery (two future 1st rounders that play his position) and others. That didn't work either. He (and his mother) wanted him to play with his brother. Oh well, one recruit, even as good as RN, does not make or break a recruiting class.

(**It is also an NCAA violation to have active NFL players recruit for football teams based on my knowledge...I remember Reggie Bush recruiting a certain Louisiana recruit for USC that resulted in an NCAA inquiry).

I am happy for RN and Ole Miss. Maybe he can start for Ole Miss what has been going on for over a decade at LSU...that is being a feeder school for NFL talent on the defensive line.

What will be interesting to see is whether other lesser valued LSU recruits on the defensive line in this class such as Gilmore, Bain and Herron end up drafted behind RN in three or four years and whether the LSU recruits play on a more dominant line over that same period of time.

An interesting development in recruiting among the traditional powers like LSU and Bama is the ability to sell to the recruit immediate playing time coupled with the ability to be spelled by other talent so that you are not so beat up during college that you take years off of your NFL career. It is what LSU and Bama are selling to physical positions such as defensive line and running back. That is not something Ole Miss has the luxury to offer right now. However, if Freeze keeps up his recruiting, it will not take long before that is a reality for Ole Miss too.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that he is arguably the most recognizable sports figure of RK's generation.

I know you asked for LSU fans. I suppose I am one when they play UM.

Sarcasm aside, I know you old folks ain't much on the NBA. :D The guy was a pretty solid athlete -- unstoppable in his prime and a champion a few times over. I'd listen to what the man had to say if he came to visit me.

Not sure who "RK" is, but Robert Nkemdiche is about 18 years old. The last time Shaq was on a title team was when RN was about 11years old. Shaq has been retired for almost 2 years. He has not been relevant in the NBA for quite a while.

Yes, he had a great NBA career. And although it seems like just yesterday for an old fart (51) like me, it was quite a while ago and not very recent in the eyes of a teenager. And basketball is a different sport than football, so not sure how informative Shaq could be.

But hey, whatever works for LSU. I was just curious and wanted input from a Tiger fan. And I was not even sure if the story was true, considering the source. But thanks again for your personal put down of me through sarcasm. I can always count on my personal stalker here to put me in my place.

I challenge you to find any personal comment I have made that is in the same stratosphere of immaturity as your name calling of me last week. Did I whine about that? Nope

I am sorry you think I'm stalking you. Wow it was surreal to actually type that. Truth is your posts tend to elicit an opinion. Were you not soliciting that very thing here? Now, get ready to have your mind blown......

You, personally, are not worth any more effort or attention than any other poster; I promise. It's a touch self-absorbed to think you are. Fix a drink and lighten up!
