I've got a hole that I built a mound in the middle for layout blinds. I mowed a circle around it in the grass so that the birds have a nice place to land and we can hunt the mound with any wind direction. Thinking this year about putting a skid or a permanent blind in there. For the simple reason we only hunt mornings 99% of the time, I am inclined to face the blind to the west. You can hunt a north or south wind like this and the rare east wind and even and NW or SW wind by moving the decoys around. West wind is out of the question with a westward facing blind unless we put the dekes way out and shoot the birds in their backs as they come over the blind. One of our best hunts this year was with a howling WNW wind on a cloudy day, but we were in layouts so facing east was not a problem.

I'd like to keep the blind in the center where I have the mound, but I just wondered what some of you like to do when placing a blind as far as which direction it faces. I imagine a westward facing blind would get it done the majority of the time and would have us with the sun at our backs on most days.

Jimbob you can't answer because we all know you royally screwed up with your permanent blind last fall.

I like a permanent blind to face West with a touch of south in it. This still keeps the sun at your back and I'd rather have a crossing wind with permanent blinds so the birds set up to where they aren't looking at faces in the blind when they're coming to land.

This way a NW wind they're are landing from left to right and a N wind is coming slightly over your right shoulder.

We've got 4 set up all different to each other. 3 of them are along a creek or bank and 1 in the middle of field.
1 faces south/south east I'd say.
1 faces west which it sets along a tree line with water to the west and south.
1 faces south
1 faces south/south west basically.
Best pit is the south/southwest with any conditions. Always produced birds in this one.
We have a little variety just to play the wind game with the birds.

Any direction other than EAST, however I wouldn't put myself in a situation that I couldn't hunt a West wind. Build the blind so that you can shoot out the back if needed. Also, I caution against setting a blind in the middle of any open area as birds seem much more shy to these set ups today as compared to even 10 years ago.

Champ is right. The birds will work from one general direction with a northish wind. Point it that way. We have a hole that with a NE,NW,N wind the birds all come from the SW.

Just leave some sunglasses in your blind bag

It's funny how birds want different parts of a field. We have one pit that faces east/west. On almost any wind, the birds want the west side of the rice levee! Even on a west wind they'll work north/south down the levee and crab into the west side of the spread. Birds are gonna do what they want! It's best to be able to adapt!

We have a blind that faces south for a north wind, one on the south side of the hole that faces west for a south wind and one that faces east for a west wind, (least favorite). Then we may stand in the trees depending on conditions. If I was going place a pit, I would face it north/south so I could shoot both wind directions...just MHO.
