Starter duck call?

Ok, I've never gotten past the basic quack and (halfway decent) feed call so I need some advice on a really good starter duck call & training tape.

I've been lucky enough over the years to have hunted with folks who could blow a fairly decent call. Unfortunately, I never took it up on a steady or concentrated basis.

I've heard the double reed call is easier to blow for beginners and teaches you the basics of calling. Therefore, the two calls I am considering are the Primos Timber Wench and the Duck Commander original (in wood). Are there others you would recommend? How about the best "educational video" or training CD (I don't have a cassette player) out there?

I'd work with double reed Haydel's to start out with. You can go to www.haydels.com and listent to every one of their calls.

I started out on a mallard tone and a yentzen(Sure Shot Now) and I would start on a double reed.Buck Gardners got a instr.tape that I have herd and its real good,The one that Big Guy Mike Keller has out is more about competition blowing so dont waste your money.But as far as picking a call to start on,I would say thats up to you find one you like. God knows I got a drawer in my office thats got over 30 calls in it that I have blown at one time or another,so just experiment. Good Luck! [img]images/smiles/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Get a Haydel Red Leg. It doesn't take much wind to blow and you can make a decent sound. As long as you blow at their tailfeathers, it's doesn't have to be contest quality to be effective. My hunting is real good and have seen him call them down from traveling mode. I doubt I'll ever get to that level. But, I hardly ever lack for killing ducks.

Unfortunately, tapes and cd's won't get you far. It's just one of those things that you have to feel your way through and keep trying until you hit on it.

I got so many duck calls it aint funny and they all sound good but as a beginner i would probly get a haydels call. But i just got a big river game call after the season and iv been practicin with it around the house and it is just about the best sounden call iv ever heard easy to blow too. If you do get a timber winch dont take it apart. I did cause i thought id fix it up and change the tone a little havnt got it back to normal yet. As for callin you dont need to do too much. Just a quack Feed and Comback and maybe somthin to get their attention from way off but that hardly ever works. Sureshot is a great call tooo. good luck!!!

Duck Dawg, I would have to say the the Primos Wench is one of the easiest calls out there to blow. I don't own one, but some of my hunting buddies do and I have used theirs many times when mine was froze up or out of commission for one reason or another (It never gets left in the truck). Most importantly, even if it is embarassing, you have to experiment with the call before you buy it. Blow that sucker right there in the isle at Wal-Mart! Good luck. I like the Haydel's DR-85. However askin' everyone what kind of call they like is like askin' what kind of lady they like. Everyone has a different take on it. The big thing is just workin' on it a lot and try to blow your call with your chest and not your mouth. Kinda like when you're playin' a musical instument. You get a real deep sound out of the call when you blow with air from your mouth. When you bring it from your chest it sounds more realistic. However it often takes a while to figure out exactly how to do it. So just pick a call and go for it.

Thanks for everything guys. I'll go with both the Haydel Red Leg and the Primos Wench. As many of you said, it never hurts to try different ones and both will probably sound a little different (which might be good).
