Rice field stubble.

Postby driveby » Mon Nov 05, 2012 8:53 am

If a fella were to have access to some rice fields that aren't going to be harvested until around the week of season and needed to make a hole in the stubble, are there any good ways to go about it? It won't be rolled for me so I'm trying to come up with a way I can maybe do it with an atv or something.

I don't think you can lay rice down on a AtV legally. Yes going in or out on it but not laying it down that way. Considered manipulation to it maybe?

Rice will be harvested. I'm just laying down the stubble.

Kind of a conundrum. We had 400 acres of rice last year. It was harvested only. No rolling and no burning. The results were terrible. There was 2-6" of stubble sticking up and several "holes" in the fields that were roughly 100 yards long. No birds. Ever. Occasionally there would be a small smattering of spoons or 5-10 specks but that was it. Very disappointing. This year we have burned the same fields in hopes of uncovering more grain and making them more appealing. I'd really like to bushhog the hell out of it then strike a match but that isn't an option.

We got some with short cut stubble and some that have ben disked over  It sucks that some of the better fields were turned over by the farmer to get a jump on planting in the spring. Whats yalls experince with fields that have ben turned prior to pumping?

We are in the same situation. There's 4 40 acre rice fields. 2 have been cut and he's disking them. The other 2 have not been cut yet and won't be until probably the week of season. He says he's not touching those 2 after harvest. I've heard that song and dance before though. The same farmer also told me 2 weeks ago that he wasn't turning my bean fields after harvest then turned around and harvested them last week and disked them the next day because it happened to be dry enough. I know he's doing what's best for his farming but don't get my hopes up by telling me one thing and then turning around and doing another. The good news is there were still a lot of waste beans I could see after he disked so maybe it won't hurt too much. This will be my first year to hunt over a turned field. Last year the rains got him and he couldn't do it.

Aaahhhhh.....the farmer fun continues. He told me he would be finished with my bean fields and have my wells turned on Monday evening so I could hold water for 2 1/2 weeks before season. Well, just got off the phone with him and he says he was "held up" and isn't finished but promises he will turn my wells on tonight. This is the same stuff he did last year and he didn't put water on my fields until 3 days before season. It looks like I'm burning some more gas and riding to the delta again tonight to make sure some pumps get turned on.
